Auburn blows out Troy in mid-week matchup

Auburn traveled to Troy on Tuesday to take on the Troy Trojans. The two had met previously in February which resulted in a 13-1 victory for the Tigers. This time they would have to do it on the road against a team that was 19-4 at home.

The Tigers sent Jordan Armstrong (3-1) to the mound while the Trojans sent out Bay Witcher (3-3). It didn’t take long for the Tigers’ offense to click. In the top half of the second inning, Butch Thompson’s squad was able to scratch across two runs. First, shortstop Brody Moore scored off of a wild pitch after he had reached base earlier in the inning. Catcher Nate LaRue would then hit a sacrifice fly to bring across Land.

In the third inning, the Tigers would double their production. After center-fielder Kason Howell and third baseman Blake Rambusch reached base, the first baseman Sonny DiChiara delivered with a three-run home run. Four batters later and it was Land that brought across right-fielder Bobby Peirce. After three, the Tigers led 6-0.

In the following inning, the Tigers punched across four more runs. A single from Howell plated both second baseman Cole Foster and Blake Rambusch. Three batters later and it was designated hitter Brooks Carlson that hit a double to score Peirce. The next batter was Brody Moore who also hit an RBI single to score Carlson. After four innings of play, the Tigers led 10-0.

Finally, the Trojans were able to score their first run of the game in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, shortstop Jesse Hall was hit by the pitch which allowed center-fielder Brandon Schrepf to score. Two batters later and first baseman William Sullivan hit a single down the right field line to score two more runs.

In the sixth, LaRue singled to bring across Moore. That increased the Tigers’ lead to 11-3. In the seventh inning, Schrepf would hit a solo home run to make it 11-4. However, that was the last that any team scored the rest of the way.

The Tigers improve to 33-16 while the Trojans fall to 29-18 on the year. Both teams will return to conference play this weekend. The Trojans will remain at home and play a three-game series with Coastal Carolina. As for Auburn, they will also be at home as they will face the Alabama Crimson Tide. First pitch for Friday night’s matchup between the rivals is scheduled for 7:30 CT. The game will be airing on SEC Network.
