STARKVILLE, Miss. — If Auburn basketball breaks its three-game road losing streak, it clinches a share of the SEC regular season championship.
The Tigers (25-4, 13-3 SEC) had a chance to do it Saturday at Tennessee but watched an 11-point, second-half lead slip away. If they can score a win at Mississippi State (17-12, 8-8), though, the sting of losing at coach Bruce Pearl's former team will be somewhat forgotten. Auburn has only won three regular-season SEC titles in program history.
"Regular season championship in the SEC, to me, is the greatest prize," Pearl said. "It’s not the tournament because the tournament is three or four games. And I know what happens in March: You win six, you win a national championship. But in order to win our league this year, a year where the league is as good as it's probably ever been, that’s historic."
