Athens-area football team storms to 28 first quarter points, remains undefeated

NORTH OCONEE 56, CHESTATEE 0: At Titan Stadium in Bogart, North Oconee – ranked No. 2 in Class 4A – remained undefeated with a beatdown of winless Chestatee in Region 8-4A.

The Titans (4-0, 2-0) scored 28 first-quarter points as Carson Dominey and Brooks Thompson turned War Eagle miscues into early touchdowns and Max Wilson threw scoring passes to Landon Roldan and Luke Waterworth.

The Titans added 21 points in the second quarter as Tate Titshaw and Harrison Faulkner tallied rushing touchdowns and Dominey turned another fumble into a touchdown.

Noah Jordan tallied North Oconee’s final score on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Titans will play at North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

CEDAR SHOALS 10, EAST HALL 7: At Vikings Stadium in Gainesville, the Jaguars improved to 2-3 overall and are now 2-0 in Region 8-4A after a nip-and-tuck defensive battle.

Cedar Shoals had an opportunity to jump ahead in the first quarter but gave up a fumble in the red zone on its first possession. With 11:17 left in the second quarter, Taiwan Green scored on a 28-yard run to give the Jaguars a 7-0 advantage.

With 5:48 remaining in the third quarter, George Berrara kicked a 20-yard field goal to put Cedar Shoals up by 10. The Vikings (2-3, 1-2) scored their only touchdown with 7:12 remaining and got the ball again late, but the Jaguars’ defense made the stand to preserve the victory.

Cedar Shoals will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cherokee Bluff.

PRINCE AVENUE CHRISTIAN 56, PENSACOLA (FLA.) CATHOLIC 20: At Pensacola, Florida, the Wolverines – ranked No. 1 in Class A Division 1 – scored four times in the fourth quarter and won their 20th consecutive game and their third out-of-state contest of the season, despite three red-zone turnovers in the first half.

Quarterback Aaron Philo, who came into the game with a state-leading 1,520 passing yards, completed 24 of 48 passes for 372 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Hudson Hill caught nine passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns, Nick Hurley had five receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown and Peyton Talmadge caught four passes for 59 yards and one touchdown.

Connor Causby rushed 11 times for 90 yards and one touchdown. Jake Bobo recorded a strip-and-score turnover in the third quarter.

Prince Avenue Christian (6-0) will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mary Persons.

ATHENS ACADEMY 49, MOUNT VERNON 16: At Slaughter Field, the Spartans improved to 3-2 with a lopsided victory over previously unbeaten Mount Vernon, which came into the game ranked No. 9 in Class 2A (Athens Academy’s third ranked opponent of the season).

The Spartans jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, as Jamari Welch (who came into the game with 475 rushing yards through five games) scored on a 41-yard run with 10:34 left and Jeremiah Wingfield reached the end zone on a 34-yard run about a minute later after a Mount Vernon fumble.

In the second quarter, Hampton Johnson tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Whitehead, Wingfield scored on a 10-yard run with nine minutes remaining and Johnson connected with Boone Presnell on a 61-yard touchdown pass as the Spartans took a 35-7 lead at the half.

Welch scored on a 13-yard run with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter and Johnson threw his third touchdown pass of the night, a 67-yarder to Keyon Standifer, with 8:13 left in the game.

Athens Academy is off Friday and will open 8-2A play at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Providence Christian.

COMMERCE 38, BANKS COUNTY 21: At Tiger Field at Ray Lamb Stadium in Commerce, the Tigers – playing at home for the first time since Aug. 18 – defeated the previously-undefeated Leopards for the 19th consecutive time and improved to 4-1.

As has been the case for much of the season, Jaiden Daniels (who came into the game with 551 rushing yards) and Tysean Wiggins (who came in with 621 rushing yards) did most of the offensive damage for Commerce.

Daniels scored the first touchdown on a 21-yard run to cap a nine-play 81-yard drive with 7:56 left in the first quarter. After the Tigers recovered a Banks County fumble, Wiggins scored on a 1-yard run with 5:45 left in the first to put Commerce up 14-0.

Ivy Tolbert kicked a 32-yard field goal with 4:32 remaining before halftime to give the Tigers a 17-7 lead.

In the third quarter, Wiggins posted a 44-yard run with 2:21 left as Commerce went up 31-7, and Daniels completed the scoring with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter as he tossed a halfback option pass to Peyton Evans. Daniels finished the game with 163 rushing yards and 31 passing yards.

The Tigers will host First Presbyterian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

EAST JACKSON 42, JOHNSON-GAINESVILLE 0: At Billy Ellis Memoria Stadium in Gainesville, the Eagles recorded their first shutout of the season and are 5-0 for the first time since 2009.

Quay Hill ran for two touchdowns to lead East Jackson and he was followed by Branturan Callahan, who ran a for touchdown, and Javan Huff, who had a pick six. Drew Richardson threw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Goolsby and ran for another score.

The Eagles will open Region 8-2A play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Banks County.

OGLETHORPE COUNTY 57, RIVERSIDE MILITARY ACADEMY 0: At Lexington, the Patriots pitched their first shutout since last September (a 35-0 victory over Sekinger on Sept. 29) and improved their record to 2-3 with a decisive victory over winless Riverside Military.

Jayden Wallace threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Johnson, and after a safety, Wallace hit Darius Heard on a scoring pass to give the Patriots a 15-0 first-quarter lead. Jake Turner ran in for two touchdowns and Wallace threw another scoring pass to Heard as Oglethorpe County went up 36-0.

In the third quarter, Quentin Nash rushed for a touchdown and Heard returned a punt 50 yards, and in the fourth quarter freshman quarterback Hunter Hall ran 22 yards with 8:40 remaining to close out the Patriots’ scoring.

Oglethorpe County will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Seckinger.

JACKSON COUNTY 35, APALACHEE 17: At Hoschton, the Panthers snapped a two-game losing streak and kept the Wildcats winless in a Region 8-6A game.

Jackson County got rushing touchdowns from Daniel Stites, Peyton Scott and Jaydan Hibbert.

Hibbert also thew a touchdown pass to Jacob Coombs and Bo Souto recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

For Apalachee, Kenny Rodrigues caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Nate Magnussen, Jacob Galamos hit a 35-yard field goal and Prince Tate scored on a 9-yard run.

The Panthers (3-3, 1-1) will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Habersham Central. The Wildcats (0-6, 0-2) will host Shiloh at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN 38, KING’S RIDGE CHRISTIAN 6: At Bethlehem, the unbeaten Knights posted another convincing GIAA victory and are now 6-0.

Tristian Puckett registered two rushing touchdowns to lead Bethlehem Christian. Lance Burkhalter, Josh Adams and Zeke Clanton ran for one touchdown each and Bennett Logan hit a 43-yard field goal and was 3-for-4 on extra point attempts.

The Knights will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Academy in their GIAA Region 4-4A/3A opener.

DAVID EMMANUEL 36, WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN 0: At Stillmore, the Lions dropped to 2-4 after a shutout by the Eagles.

Westminster Christian will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Westminster Augusta.
