Utah runs all over short-handed Arizona State in Pac-12 football rout

Look back at our updates from the ASU vs. Utah Pac-12 college football game on Saturday.

Utah demolishes short-handed ASU in Pac-12 football game

Injuries have taken a toll on the ASU football team this season.

That toll became even larger in Saturday's 55-3 loss to Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

The Sun Devils lost quarterback Trenton Bourguet to injury after three offensive plays and couldn't compete with the Utes in the Pac-12 Conference game.

Bourguet briefly returned later in the game, but was pulled after coming back for one series.

He was just 3-for-6 passing for minus-1 yard.

His replacement, Jacob Conover, was 5-for-22 for 41 yards and an interception.

ASU already has quarterbacks Jaden Rashada and Drew Pyne out with injuries.

ASU entered the game down to six scholarship linemen with Isaia Glass, Emmit Bohle, Ben Coleman, Bram Walden, Sione Finau and Max Iheanachor out.

P Josh Carlson, RB DeCarlos Brooks, DL Anthonie Cooper and DB Montana Warren also were out for the game.

The Sun Devils appeared to also lose DL Prince Dorbah to injury and DE Michael Matus, who will be out for the rest of the season.

Bourguet was seen on crutches and in a boot after the game.

ASU was outgained in the game, 513-83. ASU had 43 rushing yards. Utah had 352.

The 83 yards are the second fewest it has ever gained in a game.

In 1946, ASU gained 12 yards in a game against Arizona.

ASU had six first downs in the game. Utah had 26. Utah went 10-for-16 on third down. ASU was 1-for-15.

Utah QB Bryson Barnes was 19-for-28 for 161 passing, with a career-high four passing touchdowns.

He also ran for 56 yards on seven carries.

Ja'Quinden Jackson led Utah's rushing attack with 111 yards on 13 carries, including a touchdown.

ASU (2-7) faces UCLA next week.

Utah (7-2) plays at Washington.

Final score: Utah 55, ASU 3

ASU, Utah trade turnovers on downs

ASU drove 19 yards on its next possession, turning the ball over on downs after seven plays.

Utah then turned the ball over on downs after just four plays and nine yards.

Then ASU turned the ball over again after gaining nine plays on four downs.

Utah runs for another score vs. ASU

Well, this game has gotten downright ugly.

After ASU went 3-and-out, Utah's Nate Johnson rushed for a 59-yard TD on the Utes' second play of their next possession, giving Utah a 48-3 lead.

And there is still 11:04 left in the game.

Utah has rushed for 299 yards in this game.

ASU has rushed for 34 yards.

Utah extends lead vs. Arizona State with Bryson Barnes' 4th TD pass

ASU turned the ball over on downs on its next possession, gaining nine yards on four plays.

Utah took advantage.

The Utes added to their lead with Bryson Barnes' fourth touchdown pass of the game, a career best for the QB.

This one was a 2-yard pass to Landen King that put Utah up 41-3 early in the fourth quarter.

Score: Utah 41, ASU 3 (12:59 left in fourth quarter)

Utah extends lead with field goal against Arizona State

Score: Utah 34, Arizona State 3 (3:47 left in third quarter)

ASU football turns ball over against Utah

It's still that kind of day for ASU.

RB Cameron Skattebo threw a nice 41-yard pass to Troy Omeire on ASU's next possession, but Omeire was called for offensive pass interference on what announcer J.B. Long called a "marginal" call.

Two plays later, Jacob Conover threw an interception for the Sun Devils, giving the ball back to Utah.

Utah forced to punt for just second time of game vs. ASU

The Sun Devils just forced Utah to punt for the second time of the game after a three-and-out for the Utes.

ASU's Melquan Stovall ran the punt back for a touchdown, but a holding penalty nullified his great return.

It's been that kind of day for Arizona State.

ASU picks up first 3rd down conversion of game vs. Utah

We're trying to find some positives for ASU in this game.

How about this? The Sun Devils were able to convert their first third down conversion for a first down on their most recent drive when Jacob Conover connected with Giovanni Sanders for 20 yards on a 3rd and 4.

Unfortunately, ASU lost 15 yards on the rest of their possession and had to punt after six plays and 11 total yards on the drive.

ASU is now 1-for-10 on third down in this game.

Utah extends lead vs. ASU with just one play

The Utes needed all of just one play - a 54-yard touchdown run from Ja'Quinden Jackson - to extend their lead to 31-3 against ASU.

It could be a very long second half for Arizona State.

Utah has 27 rush attempts for 223 yards rushing in this game.

Score: Utah 31, ASU 3 (12:26 left in third quarter)

Sun Devils begin third quarter with 3-and-out vs. Utah

ASU began the second half the same way it began the first half, with a 3-and-out.

Jacob Conover came out at QB, and it appears he will be the Sun Devils' QB the rest of the way.

He was sacked on one play for a loss of seven yards, and he ran for 14 yards on another, but the Sun Devils weren't able to get first down yardage after a delay of game penalty.

ASU enters half trailing Utah, 24-3

The Sun Devils must have decided to not risk further injury to Trenton Bourguet, or they felt the game was already out of hand, because ASU elected to bring Jacob Conover back in at QB on Arizona State's last possession of the first half.

Conover completed his first two passes on ASU's drive, but had his last three fall incomplete and ASU was forced to punt again.

Conover is now 2-for-11 for 14 yards in relief of the injured Bourguet.

It was a nightmare of a first half for the Sun Devils, who had 13 yards passing and 14 yards rushing in the first two quarters.

Utah had 130 yards passing and 167 yards rushing.

ASU went 0-for-7 on third downs. Utah went 7-for-9. ASU had four first downs in the first half. Utah had 20.

Utah has a 20:04 to 9:02 advantage in time of possession.

Is it any wonder the Utes hold a 24-3 lead?

Score: Utah 24, ASU 3 (halftime)

Bryson Barnes, Utah extend lead before half vs. ASU

Bryson Barnes and the Utah Utes extended their lead on the ASU Sun Devils before the half of Saturday's game against ASU at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Barnes threw his third touchdown pass of the game, this one a 20-yard pass to Munir McClain with 54 seconds left in the first half, to give Utah a 24-3 lead on Arizona State.

Barnes is 15-for-23 passing for 130 yards in this game, with the three touchdown passes.

Score: Utah 24, ASU 3 (:54 left in second quarter)

ASU gets Trenton Bourguet back vs. Utah

Trenton Bourguet is tough.

The ASU QB returned on the Sun Devils' next possession after leaving the game with an injury suffered on the third offensive play for Arizona State.

The Sun Devils' first drive with Bourguet back went for 4 plays and 11 yards, but there was a big difference with him behind center again, which at least gives ASU some hope the rest of this game.

ASU defense holds Utah to field goal

It appeared that the Utes were going to run their way to a touchdown on their next drive.

But ASU's defense came up big late in the possession to hold Utah to a 30-yard field goal from Cole Becker.

Utah had a 1st & 10 at the ASU 18, but the Sun Devils held Utah to the field goal.

Utah's drive went for nine plays and 49 yards. They gained all of their yards on the drive rushing the ball.

The Utes now have 145 yards rushing on 22 carries in this game and lead by 14.

It feels like it should be more.

Score: Utah 17, ASU 3 (4:05 left in second quarter)

ASU forced to punt again against Utah

Trenton Bourguet was shown riding a bike on the sideline for ASU, but Jacob Conover remained in the game at QB.

It didn't go well against the Utes' defense.

Conover three two incomplete passers and then was sacked for a 2-yard loss as the Sun Devils went 3-and-out against Utah.

ASU is 0-for-5 on third downs in this game.

Conover is now 0-for-6 passing.

As a team, ASU is 2-for-9 passing for one yard. It's not like the rushing game is faring much better. The Sun Devils have nine carried for 11 yards.

ASU football gets another stop vs. Utah with missed field goal

Bryson Barnes can beat you with his arm.

He can also beat you with his legs.

The Utah QB had a couple of 17-yard runs on the Utes' next possession, as well as a 10-yard run.

He has six carries for 54 yards in the game to lead Utah's rushing game, but his team wasn't able to capitalize when Cole Becker missed a 37-yard field goal after a 10-play, 45-yard drive.

There is 9:30 left in the first half.

Sun Devils can't get momentum against Utah

Arizona State had to punt after a 5-play, 14 yard drive against the Utes.

Jacob Conover is 0-for-4 in relief of Trenton Bourguet at QB for the Sun Devils.

The broadcast did say that Bourguet was seen jogging back onto the field after getting re-taped after exiting the game, so that might be a good sign for Arizona State.

Utah has 120 yards of total offense in this game. ASU has 14.

Utah is 3-for-3 on third downs. ASU is 0-for-4.

ASU gets first stop of game vs. Utah

The Sun Devils' defense desperately needed a stop against Utah after allowing the Utah to score touchdowns on their first two possessions of the game.

They got it.

Utah had to punt after a 5-play, 11-yard third possession on offense in the game, giving ASU a chance to try to get some momentum going against the Utes.

ASU was able to put more pressure on Bryson Barnes on the possession, which forced the QB to make some quick throws that went incomplete.

ASU has to settle for field goal vs. Utah

The Sun Devils had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Dario Longhetto after not being able to take advantage of Elijhah Badger's monster kickoff return.

ASU did get a first down on a 3-yard run from Cameron Skattebo on 4th and 3 on the drive, but couldn't get any closer, gaining just four yards on eight plays on the possession.

The ASU defense hasn't been able to stop Utah yet. It needs to figure out how to come up with a stop of this game could get real ugly, real fast.

Score: Utah 14, ASU 3 (3:08 left in first quarter)

ASU gets spark from Elijhah Badger on kickoff return vs. Utah

The Sun Devils absolutely needed a spark against Utah.

Elijhah Badger provided it. The wide receiver just returned a kickoff 79 yards to give ASU, and backup QB Jacob Conover excellent field position after Bourguet's injury.

Can ASU do something with it?

Utah takes 14-point lead on ASU after another impressive drive

It's been too easy for the Utes so far against the Sun Devils.

Way too easy.

Utah just took a 14-0 lead on Arizona State with 6:27 left in the first quarter with a 3-yard pass from Bryson Barnes to Devaughn Vele on its second possession of the game.

The drive took eight plays and went for 65 yards.

Barnes is 7-for-8 in this game for 66 yards and two touchdowns, both to Vele, who has four catches for 35 yards.

The Utes have 109 yards of offense. The Sun Devils have one.

Utah has a 7:02 to 1:21 advantage in time of possession.

And Arizona State appears to have lost its starting QB to an injury.

Not a great start for the Sun Devils in Salt Lake City.

Score: Utah 14, ASU 0 (6:37 left in first quarter)

ASU goes-3-and-out, Trenton Bourguet helped off field

The Sun Devils just went 3-and-out on their first possession of the game, but they might have a much bigger problem.

Starting QB Trenton Bourguet was helped off the field after being tackled after an incomplete pass for the Sun Devils. Bourguet has been starting for ASU with Jaden Rashada and Drew Pyne out with injuries.

Jacob Conover, a transfer from BYU and Chandler High product, is Bourguet's backup in this game.

Bourguet was later seen on a cart for the Sun Devils, which is not a good sign for his chances to return for ASU.

Utah marches down field to take 7-0 lead vs. Arizona State

The Utes are on the board first in Salt Lake City.

Bryson Barnes led the Utah football team on an 8-play, 72-yard drive that concluded with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele.

ASU had no answer for Barnes on that opening possession of the game. He was 5-for-5 passing for 49 yards and the touchdown. He also ran for seven yards.

Vele caught three passes for 32 yards on the drive, including the touchdown.

Score: Utah 7, Arizona State 0 (11:36 left in first quarter)
