Prince William feels the pain as Aston Villa brought down to earth by Olympiacos
Aston Villa 2 Olympiacos 4
Aston Villa have waited over four decades for a European semi-final and will have to do it the hard way if they are to end the season with a trophy.
With the Prince of Wales in attendance, Villa’s previously unblemished home record in the competition was shattered to pieces at the worst possible time.
Unai Emery has often referenced his squad’s lack of experience at this level and at times it showed here as Olympiacos put themselves in the driving seat for Thursday’s second leg in Piraeus.
On an excruciating night for the home team, Douglas Luiz missed a late penalty which could have had a major impact on next week’s reunion.

Villa expect to have influential goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez back from injury for the return leg and his absence here felt significant.
Robin Olsen is an adequate replacement for Martinez - who was suspended for this match in any case - but it was tempting to wonder what difference the Argentine World Cup winner would have made.
Emery’s decision to put Pau Torres on the bench also sparked debate, as Olsen was beaten four times with Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi scoring three of them.
Rafa Benitez was also sitting in the stand and Villa will need a performance reminiscent of Liverpool’s heroics in Istanbul 19 years ago to turn this tie around.
That was the night when Liverpool recovered from 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan to eventually win on penalties, and how Emery would settle for a spot-kick scenario in the port city next week.
John McGinn, the midfielder, said: “Everything that could have gone wrong tonight did. There were mistakes all round and it wasn’t the game we wanted.
“We’ll take responsibility but it’s up to us to go to Athens and turn it around because we’re capable. There’s still a long way to go.”
Perhaps the injuries that have afflicted Villa’s season, and the amount of games, are finally catching up with them.
In front of their owner Evangelos Marinakis, who also controls Nottingham Forest, Olympaicos completed a professional and disciplined job.
Villa must now summon the spirit of that European Cup win over Bayern Munich in 1982 to stand a chance of making the final.
They remain the only English team left in European competition by a thread.
Emery said: “We didn’t play how we have been playing, and we have to play better. They deserved to win.
“We are frustrated and disappointed, now they are the favourites. We will try this week to come back, play there and show something different.”
Under Emery, Villa have been growing increasingly optimistic that the painfully long wait for silverware could soon be over.
His team have been favourites for this competition before a ball was even kicked and, before the visit of the 47-time Greek champions, Villa had a 100 per cent record in front of their own supporters. This, however, was a chastening experience.
Martinez’s absence always felt damaging, with Olsen making only his sixth start of the season.
Villa did start the game at a rapid pace, in a frenzied atmosphere.
Olympiacos goalkeeper Kostas Tzolakis had to make the first save of the night, pushing Morgan Rogers’ shot around the post after six minutes.
Leon Bailey had the ball in the net shortly after but the goal was disallowed for an alleged push by Clement Lenglet on Vicente Iborra.
Olympiacos had been under pressure so the opening goal was against the run of play.
El Kaabi was sent clear after a flick by Chiquinho and the striker swept the ball past Olsen. Initially disallowed, a VAR review adjudged that Matty Cash had played El Kaabi onside.
After VAR review, Olympiacos take the lead at Villa Park 😳

Emery detected panic in his players and was seen imploring them to “calm down” on a number of occasions as they sought a response. Yet Olympiacos remained dangerous and added a second goal in the 29th minute.
It was El Kaabi again, producing another clinical finish after a fine chipped pass from Daniel Podence caught out the Villa defence. Villa were becoming increasingly agitated, yet hauled themselves back into the contest in added time.

Moussa Diaby, the record £42 million signing, was sent into space in the area by Bailey and his low shot beat Tzolakis at the near post. Villa had been in the ascendancy but the game swung back towards the visitors three minutes later.
After Villa failed to clear a corner, Panagiotis Retsos headed the ball back towards goal and Douglas Luiz clearly handled with his arm up. El Kaabi stepped up to complete his hat-trick, calmly slotting the ball past Olsen.
It was another moment for Villa to reflect on Martinez, after his penalty heroics in the quarter-final second leg in Lille. Olympiacos added a fortuitous fourth when midfielder Santiago Hezze’s shot took a wicked deflection to leave Olsen wrong-footed.
Villa then wasted a glorious chance to score a third goal when Douglas Luiz placed his penalty wide, after substitute Jhon Duran was fouled.
While Emery is around, anything is possible yet his hopes of reaching yet another European final are hanging in the balance.

John McGinn talking to TNT
“Not the game we wanted. We wanted a lot more control. We started the game well. They’re a good side. We wanted a victory going to Greece. We showed we’re capable of coming back.
“Mistakes all round tonight. We’ll take responsibility but it’s up to us to go to Athens and turn it around because we’re capable. They played very well tactically. They played the way we expected so there were no surprises.
“Everything that could have gone wrong tonight did. The manager was still positive in there. There’s still a long way to go. We need to play a lot better than we did tonight but we’re more than capable of doing it.
“Hopefully we’ll have a few players back. The onus is on us to attack Olympiacos and score some goals. We have a mountain to climb but we know we’re capable.”

Aston Villa are aiming to reach their first European final since winning the European Cup in 1982 when they host Olympiacos in tonight’s Europa Conference League semi-final first leg. They overcame Lille in the quarter-finals on penalties to reach the semi-finals. One player Aston Villa will be without tonight is Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who is suspended after picking up three yellow cards in the Conference League.
Martinez caused quite the stir in the previous round against Lille, where he picked up a second yellow card in the penalty shoot-out but was not sent off. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has given his backing to Robin Olsen, who will start tonight in Martinez’s absence.
“Martinez is very competitive and very important and helped us a lot,” Emery said. “But when an issue like that, the yellow card, and a small injury as well, we have to protect, help and support and push another player in the squad.
“Robin Olsen has been very competitive every day in training. When he played he helped the team and the team believes in him and trusts in his performances. On Saturday, he played 45 minutes against Chelsea and he saved us. He’s a humble man and hopefully he can help us and he can feel comfortable as well playing.”
Aston Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League in the final Champions League spot, seven points ahead of Tottenham who play Chelsea tonight, which you can follow live here. Emery has admitted that the Premier League is still their first priority.
“The most successful teams in the world and my reference as a coach are the winning teams, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Man City, they’re a guide for myself when I’m trying to play in different competitions. Now we are very excited with the Conference League and very motivated with the Premier League. It’s not changing my first message when we started the season.
“The most important thing is the Premier League, then FA Cup and Carabao Cup and Conference League and in case we’re getting to the end of the season and being a contender then of course the importance changes a little bit. The first priority is still the Premier League but we’re going to play both trying to do the best in both.”
In the other semi-final tonight, last season’s runners-up Fiorentina host Club Brugge.
