Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

17:13

The full-time whistle is greeted by a huge roar at the Emirates as Arsenal go four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, holding on for a nervy 2-1 win over Wolves! The Gunners looked like cruising to three points when Saka and Odegaard capped flowing moves with accurate finishes in the first 13 minutes, but the likes of Martinelli, Jesus, Trossard and Nketiah missed glaring chances to keep Wolves in the contest. There was almost a sting in the tail for Arsenal as Cunha's brilliant finish allowed O'Neil's visitors to push for an unlikely draw late on, but Arteta's men held on! They will be watching on as the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa play on Sunday, before travelling to Luton Town for their next Premier League game on Tuesday. Wolves are also in action in three days' time, looking to respond to back-to-back defeats when Burnley visit Molineux. Until then, it's goodbye from us, and we'll see you next time.

Sarabia cuts inside to cross on his left foot… and Raya gets up to make the catch. Have Arsenal just about done enough?

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

17:03

All of a sudden, it's Arsenal with everyone behind the ball as Wolves try to work an angle to put a cross into the box. Sarabia fails to keep a mishit pass in play, and Zinchenko celebrates as if he's scored a goal! His mistake has put the Gunners under so much unnecessary pressure!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

17:02

Kalajdzic fouls Kiwior and O'Neil isn't happy with the time Arsenal take to restart the play. With all those substitutions, this game could go beyond the 96-minute mark…

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:59

PENALTY APPEAL! Semedo gets down the right-hand channel before firing a cross into the six-yard box, where Hwang insists it stuck Saliba's arm! The VAR takes a look… and the incident is cleared, much to the relief of the home fans.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:58

There will be SIX minutes of stoppage time here! That's a huge boost for Wolves!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:58

You can feel the tension around the Emirates as Arsenal fail to make anything of a right-wing corner and Wolves look to break. It would be simply remarkable if O'Neil's men can salvage a point from this game – they looked dead and buried!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:57

POST! ARSENAL GO CLOSE TO KILLING THE CONTEST! The Gunners look to restore their two-goal lead immediately, with Nketiah played through on goal. Bentley gets the slightest of touches to his right-footed shot, and it bounces of the left-hand post and away! Wolves are still in this game!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:54

Yellow Card Hee-Chan Hwang

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:53

A yellow card is shown to a member of Arsenal's coaching staff, with the fourth official not taking too kindly to their protests after that decision not to award a free-kick.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:52

Assist Nélson Cabral Semedo

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:52

Half chance! Arsenal are furious as Trossard is denied a free-kick on the edge of the Wolves box, and the visitors break. The ball is worked out to Hwang, who sits Saliba down and finds space to shoot, but his low effort is held by Raya at his near post.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:51

DOUBLE SAVE FROM BENTLEY! Arsenal should be 3-0 up. Havertz wins possession and links up with Odegaard to send Trossard through on goal. He holds off Toti before firing in a low shot, and Bentley gets down to make the block. The rebound is turned goalwards by Saka, but the Wolves substitute is again in the way!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:49

Only Saka (seven) has attempted more dribbles than Cunha's three in this game.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:48

Wolves steal possession in a good position through Traore, who finds Cunha on the right side of Arsenal's area. He hangs up a cross towards the far post, where Hwang is unable to divert a header towards goal. The visitors have had a few promising moments, with Cunha at the centre of most of them, but they have failed to make them count.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:46

We're into the final 10 minutes of the 90 here, and in truth, the second half has not been much of a spectacle. Will Wolves open up in a bid to force a grandstand finish?

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:45

Arteta is taking no risks with Tomiyasu, bringing White on at right-back as the Japan international gets to his feet and walks around the pitch and off.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:45

There's a concerning moment for Arsenal here, with Tomiyasu going down off the ball and signalling that he needs medical attention. The Japanese full-back has impressed at both ends here and Arteta will not want to lose him to injury.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:44

Arteta opts to rest Martinelli, with a trip to Luton Town on the horizon in midweek. Havertz is on, looking to maintain his recent goalscoring form.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:44

OVER! Arsenal go close to a third goal as Saka takes aim from 25 yards out. His dipping, left-footed strike flies just over the top-right corner and hits the stanchion behind Bentley's goal. That was close!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:42

Since losing 1-0 to Manchester United on matchday one, Wolves have scored in each of their last 12 Premier League games. It's their second-longest scoring streak in Premier League history, following an 18-game run between August and December 2019. That run is definitely in danger of ending here.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:41

Semedo is fouled on halfway as he looks to play a give-and-go with Sarabia. Arsenal have done well in breaking up any half-threatening moments from Wolves, who are yet to really give this a go. Will they start to take more risks in the latter stages?

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:39

Martinelli skips past Semedo before pulling the trigger from the left side of the box, but the Wolves defender gets back to block the ball up into the air, and it drops safely into the arms of Bentley. The substitute goalkeeper hasn't had a great deal to do so far.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:38

Both teams have had just two shots each in the second half, with Wolves actually edging the xG (expected goals) battle 0.08-0.06! It's safe to say Arsenal are content with their position in this match.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:37

The pace of this game has really dropped now. Wolves try to inject some speed into it as Traore gets away from Rice, but Zinchenko steps infield to make the challenge. Arsenal have been excellent out of possession.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:34

The first yellow card of the game goes to Saliba after he drags Hwang back on halfway, preventing a possible Wolves counterattack.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:34

Arsenal make their first substitution as Jesus is replaced by Nketiah. The Brazilian had been involved in seven goals in his six Premier League starts against Wolves (six goals, one assist) before this game, but he failed to get on the scoresheet this time.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:32

When Wolves made their double substitution a few moments ago, Doherty passed a note to captain Kilman detailing some tactical changes. The Ireland international looks to be playing at left wing-back, with Sarabia joining Cunha and Hwang in a front three.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:31

Arsenal put another patient move together as Odegaard offloads to Rice on the edge of the area, but the former West Ham man drags his first-time shot well wide of the bottom-left corner.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:30

Here come the Wolves changes. Doherty replaces Hugo Bueno, who has been playing with his knee strapped up after making his return from injury a few weeks ago. There's a smattering of boos as the former Tottenham man enters the action.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:29

Substitution Jean-Ricner Bellegarde Matthew James Doherty Pablo Sarabia García

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:29

Tomiyasu threads a neat pass into the path of Saka inside the area, but Dawson is alert to the danger as he blasts a clearance out of play. Arsenal are back in possession, looking to work an opening, as Sarabia and Doherty wait to come on for Wolves.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:26

It looks like O'Neil is going to blink first, with the game really in a lull at present. Sarabia looks to be among those preparing to enter the action for Wolves.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:25

Rice finds Trossard in space in midfield, and the Belgian turns before blazing a shot high and wide from 30 yards out. That was an ambitious effort to say the least.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:24

Arsenal will be looking to keep their foot down to quieten some of their critics here. Though they're top of the league, there have been plenty of suggestions that their football has been less than free-flowing this term. They've definitely dropped the pace since making that blistering start.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:22

Wolves are enjoying more time on the ball now, moving it patiently in midfield. Arsenal keep their shape well, however, and Bellegarde's ambitious pass runs too long for Hwang on the right-hand side.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:20

SAVE FROM RAYA! That's as close as Wolves have come. Cunha turns Rice inside-out on the left side of the area before blasting a shot towards the near post, and Raya has to stay alert to push it away. That's better from the visitors!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:19

If there are any Wolves fans requiring some positivity with their team 2-0 down, they have won seven of their 15 points in the Premier League this season from losing positions, with only Liverpool (12), Tottenham, Brighton and Chelsea (all eight) fighting back for more points. However, Arsenal have only dropped four points from winning positions, though those all came in 2-2 draws on this ground, against Fulham and Tottenham…

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:18

Arsenal managed 12 shots to Wolves' two during the first half, hitting the target four times and not facing a shot on target themselves. The Gunners have started this half on top, too.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:17

Wolves finally break out as Bellegarde carries the ball forward before playing it wide to Hugo Bueno. His deep cross is awkwardly headed into the air by Zinchenko, then Hwang can only slice his volley behind, much to the Ukrainian's relief.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:16

No penalty is the decision, with Kilman's touch on Jesus being extremely light. O'Neil must have been holding his breath there!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:15

CHANCE! Arsenal are camped on the edge of Wolves' area now. Tomiyasu swings a cross across the face of goal, and Jesus just fails to nod it into an empty net. Jesus is pleading for a penalty, saying Kilman pushed him, and the VAR will take a closer look...

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:14

Saka has been electric so far. He skips past Hugo Bueno with ease before standing up a right-footed cross, but Kilman gets there ahead of Jesus to clear. Arsenal come again through Trossard, but his cross is also headed out by Kilman.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:12

We're back under way for the second half as Hwang kicks off for Wolves. Is there any way back for the visitors?

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:04

Odegaard has bossed the game for Arsenal so far, with the Gunners captain scoring their second goal while creating a joint-high two chances for the hosts (level with Saka) and playing 22 passes in the final third. Only Zinchenko (53) and Tomiyasu (51) have bettered the Norwegian's 48 touches, as he drops deep to dictate the pace of the game. Wolves' makeshift midfield needs to get closer to him!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

16:01

The half-time whistle sounds at the Emirates, and Arsenal are cruising to a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table! The Gunners picked up where they left off in midweek by scoring two brilliant team goals in the first 13 minutes, Saka finishing across goal after being teed up by Tomiyasu for the first, before Zinchenko got to the byline to find Odegaard for the second, with the Norwegian capping a flowing move with an unerring finish. Jesus and Martinelli have missed the hosts' best chances to extend their lead, with Wolves barely offering anything at the other end, though a defensive mix-up almost allowed Hwang to make things interesting on the stroke of half-time. Arteta will want more of the same after the break, O'Neil will be desperate for more from his depleted side.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:56

HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 2-0 WOLVES.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:56

CHANCE FOR WOLVES! Out of nowhere, a mix-up between Zinchenko and Saliba allows Hwang to burst through on goal. The ball is spinning slightly away from him, however, as Raya gets there first with a vital block. Any touch from the South Korean and he'd have been in for a goal or a penalty!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:54

Wide! Martinelli cuts inside Semedo again before laying off to Trossard under pressure, and the Belgian drags his effort well wide of the near post from 20 yards out.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:54

There have been far too few of those moments for Wolves. Their tricky front players have caused plenty of problems against elite opponents this season, but they've simply failed to get them into this game.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:52

Wolves finally isolate Cunha one-on-one against Gabriel on the break. The forward skips round his compatriot on the outside before going down in the box… but the referee shakes his head and Gabriel drags Cunha back to his feet. It was a very half-hearted appeal – Gabriel definitely got the ball with a firm challenge.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:51

SAVE! Kilman's terrible pass plays Wolves into trouble as Rice finds Jesus darting into the box on the Arsenal left. He tries to slide his effort across goal and into the far corner, but it lacks power and Bentley can gratefully dive on it.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:50

Odegaard finds Saka with another delicate throughball, but Toti does well to make the challenge before Tomiyasu fouls Bellegarde, granting Wolves some respite from the free-kick.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:49

We will have SEVEN minutes of stoppage time to end this half! That's surely due to the injuries to Sa – who was substituted – and Kilman, who stayed on.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:48

Odegaard tries to slide a clever pass through for Saka, but Hugo Bueno stays alert to cut it out. Good defending from the stand-in left wing-back.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:46

Looking at the average positions taken up by the teams in the first half, all Arsenal players bar Gabriel, Saliba and Raya have been stationed in the Wolves half. They've dominated and penned their visitors back from the off.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:45

Wolves skipper Kilman has to go off the pitch momentarily after receiving treatment, but he'll re-enter the action shortly.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:44

There's a stoppage in play as Kilman stays down in the aftermath of that Arsenal chance. He appears to have been caught in the face by Gabriel and is receiving medical attention, but he'll be fine to continue.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:42

WHAT A MISS! Jesus blazes over! A desperate scramble ensues from the corner, with Traore only half clearing the ball. Saka swings a great cross towards the back post, where Jesus arrives two yards out to swipe a poor volley over the crossbar! Tomiyasu appeared to get a touch in front of Jesus, perhaps putting the Brazilian off.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:41

POST! Saka beats Toti to a loose ball before sliding a good pass across to Martinelli on the far side of the box. He bends his effort towards the bottom-right corner, beating Bentley's dive but seeing the ball bounce off the upright and away. The Gunners keep it alive as Rice pulls the trigger from 25 yards out, and it deflects wide for a corner!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:39

That is exceptional from Martinelli. Wolves finally find space to break through Semedo, but the Brazil star tracks back all the way to his own corner flag to win a throw for his team. Great work from the winger!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:38

Arsenal have won 50% of their Premier League games in December (86/172), only having a lower win rate in January (48.7%) and November (45.4%) between August and May in the competition. However, they have won their last six in December, their longest such run in the month in the Premier League. They are on course to make a good start to the festive season here.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:38

Doyle lifts a lovely ball towards the far post, but Toti is unable to meet it on the stretch and the Gunners get the goal-kick. Raya plays his way into trouble unnecessarily, but Odegaard eventually does well to win a throw off Hugo Bueno.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:36

Odegaard slides in late on Cunha and concedes a free-kick perhaps 35 yards away from the Gunners' goal, to the left of centre. Hugo Bueno and Doyle are over the dead ball.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:35

Wolves finally manage a foray forward as Hugo Bueno finds space to cross from the left. It's just too high for Cunha to make a firm connection in the centre, though, and Hwang is crowded out when he picks up the loose ball on the far side.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:33

We're past the half-hour mark here, with Wolves finally enjoying a prolonged spell on the ball. They're struggling to go anywhere with it, though, with the energetic hosts pressing ferociously and forcing them back time and again.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:32

Wolves are yet to manage a touch in Arsenal's area, with the Gunners recording 15 at the other end. The visitors haven't mounted an attack of any description in an insipid display.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:31

Cunha and Bellegarde combine to clear the set-piece, but Wolves can't escape their own third and Arsenal come straight back. Fortunately for the visitors, Kilman beats Martinelli to an overhit pass before winning a foul.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:30

More Arsenal pressure! Semedo trips Martinelli near the corner of the box, granting the hosts a free-kick in a good area. Trossard's delivery is cleared as far as Rice, who hammers a shot off a gold shirt and behind for a corner.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:28

Another chance! Martinelli shifts through the gears and breezes past Semedo, before checking back to shoot from just inside the area. His effort hits Kilman in the chest before bouncing to Trossard, who sees his volley blocked at close quarters.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:27

Saka's opening goal was Arsenal's 100th goal of 2023, making them just the fifth team from Europe's top five leagues to reach a century across all competitions this calendar year, after Man City (137), Real Madrid (119), Bayern Munich (111) and Bayer Leverkusen (110).

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:24

Substitution José Pedro Malheiro de Sá Daniel Ian Bentley

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:24

Arsenal have completed exactly twice as many passes (164) as Wolves (82) so far. It's been one-way traffic from the first whistle.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:23

HUGE CHANCE FOR 3-0! Arsenal should be out of sight. Odegaard's delicate chip into the area is brought down by Trossard, whose brilliant touch takes Dawson out of the game. He goes to pull the trigger on the six-yard line, but Sa gets down to smother the ball before Toti completes the clearance.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:22

Jesus breaks into the right-hand channel and looks to take on Toti, who stands his ground and wins the ball cleanly on the byline. A belated offside flag grants Wolves the free-kick, but they immediately give the ball back to their hosts. This has been so poor from the visitors.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:20

Arsenal are knocking the ball around with so much confidence here, picking up where they left off against Lens. Odegaard is dropping deep in front of Gabriel and Saliba to dictate the play.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:19

Arsenal could hardly have asked for a better start to this game, with O'Neil's patched-up visitors 2-0 down and chasing shadows. Barring a remarkable collapse, the Gunners are going four points clear at the summit.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:15

Assist Oleksandr Zinchenko

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:14

Goal Martin Ødegaard

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:14

O'Neil's last trip to this stadium saw his Bournemouth team race into a surprise 2-0 lead – their first goal coming almost directly from kick-off – before squandering that advantage in a 3-2 defeat last season. It's safe to say his new club have had a much more difficult start to this match.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:13

Wolves are really struggling to get out here. Saka looks for a give-and-go with Odegaard as he breaks in behind Toti, but the Norwegian's return pass is too heavy and it runs behind.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:12

After that goal, Wolves have still never kept a clean sheet in 19 Premier League games against Arsenal. In Premier League history, only West Bromwich Albion have faced an opponent more without ever recording a shutout (26, also against Arsenal).

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:11

There was a very brief VAR check on the goal, possibly for offside against Saka at the start of the move, but it's swiftly waved away. The Gunners take an early lead!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:09

Assist Takehiro Tomiyasu

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:08

Goal Bukayo Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:07

Only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (11) has scored or assisted a goal in more different Premier League games than Hwang (nine) this season. Hwang hasn't scored or assisted more than once in any game so far, with no player having more goal involvements without doing so more than once in a game (nine, the same as Arsenal's Saka).

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:07

Wolves now look to build down their right as Semedo offloads to Hwang, but the South Korean's heavy touch goes all the way behind for an Arsenal goal-kick.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:06

Arsenal are looking to settle into their rhythm, keeping possession patiently in midfield. It looks like a 5-3-2 for Wolves without the ball, with Bellegarde dropping in as a third midfielder. Odegaard looks for the run of Jesus, but his pass is overhit and goes out for a goal-kick.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:04

It will be fascinating to see how Wolves go about keeping Arsenal at bay without their first-choice midfield pairing here. With Gomes and Lemina banned, Traore and Doyle have a huge chance to impress in the centre of the park. The former tries to break through the middle immediately, but he runs into traffic around halfway.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:03

We are under way on a bitterly cold day in north London, with Trossard getting the ball rolling for the Gunners!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

15:00

Arsenal have won their last four Premier League games against Wolves, having won just two of their previous eight against them (three draws, three defeats). Does another difficult outing await Wolves at the Emirates? The teams are out on the pitch, and kick-off is coming up shortly!

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

14:52

O'Neil, meanwhile, makes four changes to the Wolves side which started at Craven Cottage. Three are enforced with Rayan Ait-Nouri injured and both Gomes and Lemina serving one-match bans after accumulating five yellow cards, so Hugo Bueno, Traore and Doyle come in. Dawson is back from his own suspension in defence, replacing Santiago Bueno, but winger Pedro Neto is still sidelined. Chirewa, Whittingham and Hubner take their places on a young visiting bench.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

14:48

Arteta makes just one change to the Arsenal team which hammered Lens on Wednesday. Havertz – who opened the scoring in that game after netting a late winner at Brentford last Saturday – drops to the bench as Trossard comes in. Fabio Vieira, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe and Jurrien Timber are the Gunners' only absentees for this one.

Arsenal vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

14:44

WOLVES SUBS: Matt Doherty, Santiago Bueno, Fabio Silva, Sasa Kalajdzic, Pablo Sarabia, Dan Bentley, Tawanda Chirewa, Matthew Whittingham, Justin Hubner.
