New arrivals power Giants past Phillies

PHILADELPHIA -- A pair of newcomers helped the San Francisco Giants escape the offensive doldrums and snap their losing streak.

Brett Pill and Roger Kieshnick, recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday, combined for five hits and six RBIs Wednesday night, and the Giants halted a five-game losing streak with a 9-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Pill went 3-for-5 with a homer and a career-high four RBIs, while Kieschnick, making his major league debut, went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Brandon Crawford also homered in support of Chad Gaudin (5-2). Gaudin, 1-for-56 as a hitter in his career before Wednesday, ended an 0-for-40 slump with a single that gave him his first career RBI.

"Tonight we finally broke out," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Giants, who managed nine runs during their losing streak, posted their highest run total since they also mustered nine in Tim Lincecum's no-hitter against the San Diego Padres on July 13. That was 14 games ago.

"The kids came through for us," Bochy said. "I think they really lifted the club."

"I just think we came out swinging aggressively and got two-out hits," said Gaudin, who allowed one run and four hits in seven innings. "The key was getting those two-out hits. It's uplifting to see that kind of run production."

"Everything they hit, fell," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who saw his team lose for the ninth time in 10 games. "If they hit it hard, it fell. If they hit it soft, it fell. It was one of those games."

Pill, a first baseman who spent parts of the previous two seasons with the Giants, hit .148 in 14 games with San Francisco earlier this year. However, he batted .344 with 18 homers and 79 RBIs during his time at Triple-A Fresno, and went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's loss to the Phillies.

His homer, a solo shot, came in the seventh inning off Philadelphia reliever J.C. Ramirez. It was his second of the year. Crawford homered later in that inning, his sixth of the year.

"The past couple games, I hit them where they weren't," Pill said. "There's a little bit of luck involved. That always helps."

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick (9-8) lasted just two-plus innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) and eight hits. Kendrick, whose wife gave birth to the couple's second child Tuesday afternoon, didn't strike out a batter while walking one and hitting a batter.

"I'm not going to make any excuses," he said. "I have to make better pitches. It was a frustrating night."

Pablo Sandoval's one-out single in the first produced the game's first run, and with two outs Pill singled home two more. Kieschnick followed with an RBI single, making it 4-0.

Chase Utley's solo homer in the bottom of the first, his 14th of the year, put the Phillies on the board.

The Giants tacked on three runs in the third, on singles by Pill, Kieschnick and Gaudin, to assume a 7-1 lead.

NOTES: GM Ruben Amaro said before the game that the Phillies explored "a couple things" in the run-up to Wednesday's non-waiver trade deadline. "I guess the bottom line is we didn't find anything that was really satisfactory," he said. LHP Cliff Lee, RHP Jonathan Papelbon and 3B Michael Young had been mentioned in rumors in the days leading up to the deadline. ... The Giants likewise held onto OF Hunter Pence, despite talk that they'd deal him. ... Amaro said OF Domonic Brown, out since July 23 with a concussion, passed an ImPACT test Wednesday but is "at least a week away from returning." ... Manuel spoke optimistically about RHP Roy Halladay, who had shoulder surgery in May. "Personally, I think he's going to pitch before this season's over," Manuel said. ... Manuel also said it's "a day-to-day thing" with Lee, who missed last Saturday's start against the Detroit Tigers with a stiff neck. ... Phillies 3B Cody Asche, who went 0-for-4 in his first major league start, robbed Pence with a diving stab of a first-inning smash. Asche was charged with a throwing error in the sixth, however. ... Sandoval left the game in the sixth with a bruised heel, but Bochy expects him to be available Thursday. ... Pence saw an eight-game hitting streak end. ... Giants 2B Marco Scutaro went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to six games. ... Philadelphia LF Darin Ruf went 1-for-2 and reached base three times. He has now reached in 28 straight games, dating back to last season.
