Arkansas vs. BYU live score, updates, highlights from Week 3 college football game

Arkansas football is back in the friendly confines of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium Saturday to face BYU. After Saturday, Arkansas won't play another game in Fayetteville until Oct. 21.

The Razorbacks and Cougars played last year in Utah to the tune of a 52-35 Arkansas win. Both teams are 2-0 this season with one sluggish, and one convincing victory.

The Arkansas defense turned in a dominant performance last week against Kent State, holding the Golden Flashes 200 yards of total offense and just 26 rushing yards.

Quarterback KJ Jefferson has begun the 2023 campaign with back-to-back efficient performances, and he's now thrown at least two touchdown passes in six consecutive games under center. His 53 passing touchdowns re tied for fourth-most in Arkansas history.

BYU is coming off a 41-16 victory over Southern Utah where quarterback Kedon Slovis passed for 348 yards and four touchdowns. But the Cougars, like the Razorbacks, have struggled mightily in the run game to start the season.

Arkansas football vs. BYU live updates, highlights

Fourth Quarter

  • It's over, as Jefferson faces heavy pressure and can't get a final pass off on the Razorbacks final drive. BYU comes into Fayetteville and wins 38-31.

  • KJ Jefferson is stripped as he tried to make a play escaping the pocket on 3rd down. BYU takes over at the Hogs' 38, and that might do it.

  • Illegal touching ruins a big gain for BYU and produces a loss of down. Huge call, and Arkansas gets the stop it needed on third down with a Landon Jackson sack. Hogs will take over at their own 39 needing a touchdown and 4:31 remaining.

  • Arkansas wanted to go for it on 4th-and-1 from its own 34, but a false start by Brady Latham bring out the punting unit. BYU takes over at its own 24 with 6:21 remaining. Gut check time for the Arkansas defense.

  • Touchdown BYU, 8:00. Slovis finds Chase Roberts in the corner of the end zone, and it was some grab by the sophomore wide receiver. Hogs are in all sorts of trouble now, down 38-31 with eight minutes remaining.

  • Cam Little misses a 49-yard field goal off the right post, and BYU now has a chance to go take the lead. Not much going right for Arkansas over the last 10 minutes of game time.

Third Quarter

  • We head to the fourth quarter with the game tied 31-31. Arkansas has a good drive going with first-and-10 at the BYU 33 when play resumes.

  • Touchdown BYU, 1:52. One play after the pick, it's a tie game. Screen pass to Parker Washington sets up an easy score. Washington now with a receiving touchdown to go with his passing touchdown. It's 31-31 with the fourth quarter rapidly approaching.

  • KJ Jefferson makes a bad decision and throws an interception. First turnover all season by the Arkansas offense, and BYU is in business at the Razorbacks' 20-yard line.

  • Field goal BYU, 4:43. The Cougars tried a fake field goal and failed miserably, but a delay of game bailed them out. The 43-yard kick is good and Arkansas leads 31-24. Jaheim Thomas with a big sack coming off the left edge on third down to force the FG try.

  • Arkansas went for it on 4th-and-inches from the BYU 49 and came up short. Cougars had zero momentum. Pittman might regret that decision tomorrow morning.

  • Another three-and-out for the Arkansas defense to start the second half, and there was some trash-talking as BYU's offense left the field. Big chance for the Razorbacks to land a haymaker with the ball and a two-possession lead.

  • Touchdown Arkansas, 11:41. Five plays, four runs, and AJ Green finishes it off with a seven-yard run right up the gut. Arkansas is finally starting to get some push up front, and the lead is 31-21 early in the third quarter.

Second Quarter

  • Field goal Arkansas, :00. Cam Little drills a 26-yard field goal, his first attempt of the season, and Arkansas will carry a 24-21 lead into the locker room. What a wild first 30 minutes in Fayetteville.

  • Fumble, recovered by Arkansas. Dwight McGlothern with an NFL-type play, getting off his block (while being held) and causing a fumble that Hudson Clark recovered. Arkansas now has the chance to take the lead with the ball at the BYU 44.

  • Touchdown Arkansas, 1:43. Freshman tight end Luke Hasz has his first career score. Beautiful deep-out route and Jefferson finds him for a 19-yard touchdown. 21-21, and that was a much needed score for the Arkansas offense.

  • Arkansas goes three-and-out with three-straight runs and the boo birds make an appearance. No rhythm for the offense.

  • Touchdown BYU, 12:54. The Cougars have taken the lead. Some great throws from QB Kedon Slovis leads to a 1-yard touchdown run by LJ Martin. Hogs trail 21-14 early in the second quarter, and aside from one big run, it's been a tough showing for the offense so far.

First Quarter

  • First quarter ends with Arkansas and BYU tied 14-14. Razorbacks have already let a two-score lead slip away and it now looks like they're in for a long fight.

  • Touchdown BYU, 2:24. And on the very next play, LJ Martin hits a hole and takes it in for a 45-yard TD. It's all tied up in Fayetteville. The Arkansas defense has been so good against the run this year, but the Cougars gashed them on that play.

  • A very questionable offensive pass interference call ruins an Arkansas drive that looked promising, and now Max Fletcher has back-to-back shaky punts. BYU somehow has the momentum with 2:34 left in the first quarter.

  • Touchdown BYU, 8:28. The Cougars bust out some trickery. Double pass with wide receiver Parker Kingston slinging a 37-yard score to running back Deion Smith. Nice throw by the lefty. Hogs lead 14-7 and somehow there is still 8:28 left in the first quarter.

  • The teams exchange punts. Singletary and McGlothern are now out for the third defensive series. Hudson Clark moves to safety, and Alfahiym Walcott takes a rest.

  • BYU had great field position for its second drive and the Arkansas defense forced a three-and-out. I think everyone is surprised by this new-look secondary, but the defensive backs have held up well through the first two series.

  • Touchdown Arkansas, 11:29. Isaiah Sategna returns the punt 88 yards for a touchdown and Arkansas leads 14-0 not even five minutes into the action. The stadium is loud. The sideline his hyped, and the Hogs are off to a dream start.

  • Dwight McGlothern AND Jaheim Singletary are not starting tonight. Instead, it's Lorando Johnson and Jaylon Braxton at cornerback, with Hudson Clark working the nickel. Hogs force a punt on the first BYU possession.

  • Touchdown Arkansas, 13:21. Well, the run game is alive. AJ Green goes off the right side and scampers 55 yards for a touchdown. Tremendous blocking from Patrick Kutas and Josh Braun on the right side of the offensive line, with a beautiful seal by freshman tight end Luke Hasz. Hogs lead 7-0 early.

Pregame

  • BYU won the toss and deferred to the second half. KJ Jefferson and the Arkansas offense will get this one started.

  • Dwight McGlothern is dressed and going through warmups. Pittman always expected he would play after taking just one snap last week against Kent State with turf toe.

  • BYU wide receiver Kody Epps is going through warmups after missing the first two games of the Cougars' season. He adds another challenge for the Arkansas secondary.

  • The Arkansas sideline is filled with recruits. This is expected to be one of the biggest weekends all year for recruits visiting campus with a four-game road trip on the horizon.

  • There are NFL scouts in attendance this evening representing the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

  • The lights are on at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium for what should be a fun Saturday night. There was definitely a more electric vibe walking amongst the tailgates compared to last week's home game against Kent State.
