Area basketball roundup for Jan. 16: Hanson girls vanquish Howard

Jan. 16—ALEXANDRIA, S.D. — Three Hanson girls players reached double-digit points as the Beavers handedly defeated Howard 59-43 Tuesday evening for their third-straight win.

Hanson used an 18-9 second-quarter margin en route to the win, shooting 40% from the field. Taziah Hawkins led the way with 17 points, four assists, and three steals. Eliza Oltmanns finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Beavers, and Alyssa Mochell had 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

For Howard, Abby Aslesen led all players in scoring with 25 points and seven rebounds. Liz Albrect finished with six points, while Dakota Spader added five rebounds for the Tigers.

Hanson (8-1) will return to the floor at home Thursday, Jan. 18, taking on Canistota at 6:15 p.m. Howard (8-5) heads back on the road as well Thursday, facing off against Bridgewater-Emery at 6:15 p.m.

* Canistota strode past Freeman Academy/Marion 50-23 in Marion. Natalie Becker led the Hawks with a near double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Kayla Papendick had 14 points and six rebounds, and Ellie Becker notched four assists and four steals. Alex Gortmaker scored seven points for FAM.

* Reagan Rus scored 25 points, and Mount Vernon/Plankinton eased by Redfield 54-17 in Plankinton. Emilee Fox added 24 points, six assists and four rebounds. Katie Rozell led Redfield with 10 points.

* Three Nighthawks notched double-digits, and Tripp-Delmont/Armour beat Bon Homme 50-46 in Tripp. Kinley Spaans had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Megan Reiner had 15 points and four assists, and Mia Reiner scored 12 points. Erin Heusinkveld and Olivia Bures powered the Cavaliers' effort with 14 points apiece.

* No. 3 Ethan kept to its winning ways with a 75-17 win over Menno. Ava Lingemann had a game-high 21 points and eight assists, while Marissa Storm had 14 points and Ella Pollreisz and Rachel Klock each scored 11 points. Ashton Massey had four points, three rebounds and three blocks for Menno.

* Avery Orth's 13 points and 18 rebounds helped Wessington Springs edge James Valley Christian 41-39 in the 281 Conference tournament semifinal. Carissa Scheel contributed 19 points, Kerstynn Heim grabbed 10 rebounds and Alyssa Grohs dished out five assists. Addie Bartholow tabbed 14 points for JVC.

* Courtney Sees' 29 points weren't enough for Avon in a tightly-contested 60-59 home loss to Viborg-Hurley. Also for the Pirates, Rilyn Thury charted 15 points and seven rebounds, and Lila Vanderlei had five assists. Charley Nelson scored 13 points for Viborg-Hurley.

* The Koupal sisters combined for 46 points as Wagner defeated O'Neil (Neb.) 66-44 at home. Ashlyn Koupal had 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Macy Koupal scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Also for the Red Raiders, Lydia Yost had nine points.

* Harley Namamy scored 26 points, and Kimball/White Lake picked up a 66-39 road win over Bridgewater-Emery. Ryann Nielsen added 15 points and four assists, and Rylee McCord had 10 points. In defeat, Hayden Hofer scored 12 points for the Huskies and Quinn Culhane had nine points.

* Mount Vernon/Plankinton defeated Redfield by a 64-32 margin in Plankinton. Ten different Titans scored, with Zach Baker going for 17 points. Tyce Feistner had 11 points and four steals, and Dylan Rihanek had five points and six rebounds.

* Avon fell to Viborg-Hurley 61-37 at home. Landon Thury had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Pirates, and Aziah Meyer scored seven points.

* Corsica-Stickney defeated Andes Central/Dakota Christian 46-34 in a battle of area teams in New Holland. Tyson Wentland led the Jaguars with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Luca Catapano scored 11 points. Peter Backes' 10 points propelled Andes Central, while AJ Johnson added nine points.

* Chris Aasen's 18 points powered Freeman to a 71-63 home win over Centerville. Tate Sorensen contributed a 15 points, 10 rebounds double-double, and Rocky Ammann added 15 points and six rebounds.

* A 16-5 third quarter run helped Wagner stave off O'Neill (Neb.) 63-57. Parker Petry paced the Red Raiders with 19 points, while Carter Cournoyer had 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Joey Cournoyer had 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

* Parker Graff's 18 fourth quarter points helped Wessington Springs defeat James Valley Christian 56-53 in the 281 Conference tournament semifinals in Wolsey. Graff finished with a game-high 29 points, while Ryder Michalek added 19 points. Jerrad Wallman scored 17 points for JVC.

* McCook Central/Montrose fell to Beresford 59-35 in Salem. Ty Morrison and Ben Wiebersick had nine points each for MCM in defeat. Andrew Atwood had a game-high 18 points for Beresford.

* Four Black Panthers reached double digits, and Platte-Geddes routed Kimball/White Lake 68-35 at home. Tanner Dyk had 19 points, Braxton Breukelman scored 16 points, Hayden Sprik notched 13 points and Parker Bailey added 10 points. Blake Leiferman led KWL with 16 points and six rebounds.

* Mason Reiner's double-double fueled Tripp-Delmont/Armour to a 50-31 win over Bon in Tripp. Reiner scored 10 points and 10 rebounds, Isaac Wunder had 12 points and nine rebounds and Riley Spaans had nine points and 10 rebounds. For Bon Homme, Caplin Cooper and Landon Schmidt each had eight points.

* Sanborn Central/Woonsocket will advance to the 281 Conference final after defeating Wolsey-Wessington 43-36 in Wolsey. Payton Uecker and Trey Moody each scored 10 points and Bryce Larson had nine points.
