Area basketball roundup for Dec. 19: MVP boys outlast SCW in battle of early season unbeatens

Dec. 19—WOONSOCKET, S.D. — Fueled by a big night from Zach Baker, Mount Vernon/Plankinton eked out a 46-43 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in a battle of unbeatens in prep boys basketball action Tuesday night.

Baker scored 29 points, and the visiting Titans outscored the Blackhawks 11-8 in the fourth quarter to clinch the win. The game was close throughout, with SCW leading 13-11 after the first quarter, and MVP taking a 22-18 lead into halftime. The sides were tied at 35 after three quarters.

Tyce Feistner aided MVP with six rebounds, six assists and four steals, and Baker had four steals. The Titans shot 42 percent from the field, and forced 19 SCW turnovers.

For the Blackhawks, Cody Slykhuis scored 12 points, Trey Moody had nine points and Jeff Boschee had 18 points. Moody added 12 rebounds and three assists. The hosts shot 53.8 percent from the field.

Up next, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (3-1) faces Lower Brule at the Huron Holiday Classic at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30, while Mount Vernon/Plankinton (3-0) visits Tri-Valley at 8 p.m. Jan. 4.

* Winner rode to a 55-34 win over Bon Homme behind a double-double from Shawn Hammerbeck, who tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ryder Halligan added 16 points, and Carter Craven had seven points and seven rebounds for the Warriors. Easton Mudder had a team-high nine points for the Cavaliers.

* Isaac Wunder's 34-points and 10 rebounds powered Tripp-Delmont/Armour's 65-52 win over Freeman Academy/Marion. Payton Westendorf added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Nighthawks. For FAM, Karter Weber had 15 points and five rebounds, and Elshadai Mesfin had 12 points.

* Three Cougars tabbed double digits, but McCook Central/Montrose fell to Chester 74-51. Ben Wiebersick led MCM with 16 points, while Jackson Schmidt and Ty Morrison each had 10 points. A trio of Chester players scored over 20 points: Jovi Wolf had 22 points, and Layke Wold and Jaxton Opdahl each had 21 points.

* Wagner surged past Menno 60-28. Preston McFayden had a game-high 18 points, and Carter Cournoyer and Parker Petry each contributed 12 points. Isaac Fergen had 11 points for Menno.

* Luke Koepsell's 22-point performance guided Howard to a 70-38 win over Colman-Egan. Kolt Koepsell added 14 points for the Tigers, and Logan Mentele had 11 points. Jase Mousel and Jack Mousel each scored nine points for the Hawks.

* Parker Graff hit five 3-pointers, and finished with a game-high 23 points in Wessington Springs' 73-44 win over Highmore-Harrold. Ryder Michalek added 22 points, and Blake Larson had 10 points.

* Brady Scott's 22 points helped lift Canistota past Bridgewater-Emery 59-43. Tage Ortman tabbed 18 points for the Hawks, and Brandon Kjetland scored 16 points. Ben Weber and Camdyn Stoterau scored 14 points for the Huskies, with Weber adding eight rebounds.

* Kylie Sachtjen scored 22 points, and Winner defeated Bon Homme 58-35. Ava Craven added nine points for the Warriors, making each of her three 3-point attempts. Olivia Bures led the Cavaliers with 10 points.

* Kaylee Voelker's five 3-pointers led Colman-Egan past Howard 52-44. Voelker had a game-high 24 points for the Hawks. Abby Aslesen and Tana Hoyer each notched nine points for the Tigers, and Liz Albrecht had eight points.

* Tripp-Delmont/Armour defeated Freeman Academy/Marion 41-20 in Tripp. Megan Reiner tabbed 11 points and nine steals for TDA, whihc had nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals from Kinley Spaans. Kalle Johnson scored seven points for FAM, and Alexa Gortmaker had six points.

* Lyman defeated Colome 58-7. Makaylee Scott had 12 points, and Brooke Palmer, Skyler Volmer and Jordyn Scott each scored 10 points.

* Three Titans notched double digits for Mount Vernon/Plankinton in its 61-21 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. Emilee Fox scored 20 points, Reagan Rus had 14 points and Vanessa Hoffman had 10 points and nine rebounds. Kali Hofer had seven points for SCW.
