The anticipation for Texas QB Quinn Ewers' 2023 season is continuing to climb, as he's been named to the Davey O’Brien Award preseason watch list, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced today.

The award goes to the best quarterback in college football and while Ewers didn't have the best 2022 season, his talent has created high expectations for his sophomore year. What comes next is replicating the play that tantalized UT fans as they saw him tear apart Alabama's defense in 2022 before an injury derailed things.

Texas has had two quarterbacks to win the award in its history, with Vince Young and Colt McCoy collecting it in 2005 and 2009 respectively. The Longhorns made the national championship game in both of those years.

Ewers threw for 2,177 yards and 15 touchdowns in 10 starts a year ago, including 369 yards and a touchdown on 31-of-47 passing in a 27-20 loss to Washington in the Alamo Bowl. As the 2023 season approaches, teammates have noted a change in his leadership as he's become more vocal and earned the respect of his teammates.

Expectation has been the word for UT in the last couple of years. "Texas is back" has become a meme and even with all of the improvements, they still ranked 12th in the coaches preseason poll. Whether they can overcome those questions and reach the pinnacle again will depend primarily on Ewers' performance.
