Analyst hints RJ Davis could return for one more year

North Carolina guard RJ Davis is being recognized during Tuesday’s home finale against Notre Dame as it’s Senior Day for the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.

Davis is one of seven players being recognized before the game as the Tar Heels look to clinch at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title. As Davis is being honored, it may not be the last home game of his career.

The guard has one more year of eligibility left due to the COVID-19 pandemic giving players an extra year. Like Armando Bacot did, he could return for a fifth and final year. And the decision is still up in the air.

Eric Bossi of 247Sports wrote on prospects who could return with their fifth season, including Davis, saying there have been ‘rumblings’ that he could return:

RJ Davis is another player who the more I watch him play the more I think to myself: “Why wouldn’t an NBA team take a chance on this dude?”

I get that Davis doesn’t have ideal size and that he’s more of a natural shooting guard than he is a floor general. But in a game where shooting is valued more than ever, Davis is very much a proven commodity. He’s likely going to be the ACC Player of the Year this season and he should be a First-Team All-American. He should also finish out his career having scored over 2,000 points and over 100 three-pointers during his fourth year of college. How is a guy with his resumé not worth at least a two-way deal?

Lately, there’s been more rumblings that Davis could be looking to play one more year of college. If he does decide to play a fifth year, there will undoubtedly be other programs that would let him know they are interested. But North Carolina has a robust NIL program of their own and it’s hard to imagine that he would play a fifth year anywhere other than Chapel Hill. Seriously, the Heels have a pair of 5-star perimeter players on the way in Ian Jackson and Drake Powell and should get back a former 5-star in Elliot Cadeau. Imagine Davis with that group!

Davis has been on a tear in his senior season, averaging 21.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 42.9 percent from the field as well. He’s the front-runner to win the ACC Player of the Year award and he is one of the biggest keys to UNC’s chances to win it all.
