Amy Weber returns to coaching high school girls soccer at Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Amy Weber determined two years away from the sport of soccer was enough.

She was announced as the new Mount Vernon High School girls soccer coach on Monday. It is a full-circle moment for Weber. She was previously the program's coach for two years and earned the Wildcats their first sectional victory.

Weber, who had a successful run at Mater Dei from 2017-21, called the move a "good, refreshing start."

"It's going to be a fun challenge," she said. "I realized how much I missed (coaching). I stepped away at a good time and two years was enough. I'm ready to go back at it again."

Weber is no stranger to leading a strong program. She posted a 63-30-8 record in five seasons at Mater Dei that included three consecutive state championships from 2017-19. Those first three postseasons at her alma mater rank among the best for girls soccer in IHSAA history. The only other program to win three straight championships is Carmel (2000-04).

Weber resigned at Mater Dei following the 2021 season. She suggested at the time the environment around the program made it unenjoyable for her to still coach. Weber has no such worries entering Mount Vernon after speaking with administration and even multiple players during the interview process.

"Small town and community," said Weber. "Sports is huge down there. The pressure for me to go out and win a state title is not there right away. It's going to be a welcome change for me. I'm excited."

Weber played collegiately at the University of Southern Indiana for two years. She was later an assistant coach under Krissy Engelbrecht.

Mount Vernon went 6-8 last fall and lost to Gibson Southern in the sectional semifinal. The Wildcats return a young roster and most of their scoring. There could be an opportunity for any team in the Class 2A sectional in the next two years with Memorial moving up a class due to the success factor.

"They're young," Weber said. 'It's going to be one of those years where I may or may not have a JV team. It depends on how many kids come out. I know they have a good Cub program. I know they're excited because they asked me if I was going to do things in the offseason."
