Amorion Walker, Michigan football's 'unicorn' DB, enters transfer portal

Michigan football's Amorion Walker has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the Free Press has confirmed.

Walker, a wide receiver-turned-defensive back, was considered one of the best athletes on the roster. Earlier this summer, cornerback Will Johnson posted an Instagram story that showed Walker ran a hand-timed 6.1-second 3-cone drill, a time which would rank as the fastest ever at the NFL combine.

That was two weeks before coach Jim Harbaugh praised him.

“I consider him a starter right now, just off the first few practices, and I think those other players I mentioned will all be right there in the hunt as well,” he said in late February. "The work ethic is so strong with him. Right now, he’s chasing strength and power.  If we’re right, he could be the type of corner, there are none like him. Like a unicorn.”

After a so-so performance in the spring game, though, Walker suffered an undisclosed injury in the summer and was seen in a walking boot in August. He missed the first four games of the season before debuting late in U-M's first game at Nebraska on Sept. 30.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder was a three-star recruit out of high school, per 247 Sports' composite rankings He held offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and LSU, among others, based on his potential ceiling.

The Ponchatoula, Louisiana native failed to receive consistent playing time in Ann Arbor. Walker played in 13 games, seven as a wide receiver in 2022 and six this season as a defensive back,; he recorded three tackles, including a half-TFL against Indiana on Oct. 14.

Walker joins wide receiver Darrius Clemons, running back CJ Stokes (who committed to Charlotte), defensive back Cam Calhoun and special teamer Jake Thaw as Wolverines departing Ann Arbor.

Michigan's secondary is thinning out with Mike Sainristil off to the NFL and Josh Wallace expected to make the same decision, and starting safeties Rod Moore and Makari Paige both expected to announce their future decisions before Monday's NFL draft entry deadline.

The Wolverines aren't without talent in the secondary for 2024, however, including Jyaire Hill, Will Johnson, Ja'Den McBurrows, Keon Sabb and DJ Waller.
