American Christian Academy baseball takes game one vs. Corner, one win from state title

OXFORD — American Christian Academy baseball defeated Corner 7-2 in the opening game of the Class 4A state title series on Wednesday at Choccolocco Park.

The win puts the Patriots one win away from the Class 4A state title. It would be the program's sixth state title and first since 2011. Game two of the series will be played at 4 p.m. Thursday at Jacksonville State, with game three to follow if necessary.

The Patriots were first to score on Wednesday, scoring two runs each in the first and second innings to take the early 4-0 lead. Corner scored both of its runs in the top of the third inning, but it was all the Yellow Jackets could get across the board.

ACA extended its lead in the third behind a solo home run from Eric Hines and again in the fifth with another solo home run, this time from Cade Durrett. Jaylen Crocker hit a single in the sixth inning to score Jackson Willingham as ACA took the 7-2 lead, which held as final.

Hines finished the day leading ACA from the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs. Durrett, Crocker, Willingham, Caleb Morrison and Caleb Lockridge each added an RBI. From the mound, Addison Goodman pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and allowing two runs, one earned, off of four hits.
