Alyssa Thomas leads Connecticut Sun to blowout win over Phoenix Mercury with triple-double performance

With a little over four minutes left in the fourth quarter Alyssa Thomas drove into the paint and scored a layup with ease.

With the bucket the Connecticut Sun forward secured her second triple-double of the season, also just the second in franchise history. She subbed out shortly after.

Led by the play of Thomas on both ends of the floor the Sun coasted to an 87-63 blowout victory over the Phoenix Mercury Tuesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Thomas, who was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month earlier in the day, finished with 10 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds.

The Sun held the Mercury to 23 of 64 (35.9%) shooting from the field and 6 of 27 (22.2%) shooting from 3-point range.

Former UConn star Diana Taurasi had 32 points the last time these teams faced, back on June 3 in Phoenix, but struggled this time around.

Taurasi missed all six of her shots in the first half, including four from beyond the arc. She did grab five rebounds and dished out an assist, however.

Despite starting the game, Taurasi wasn’t one of the five Mercury players on the floor to start the third quarter. She sat out the entirety of the second half. The Mercury did not confirm whether the 40-year-old was injured or it was precautionary for the rest.
