Alyssa Hill, John Sutherland named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators

Mar. 27—BEMIDJI — Two Bemidji State basketball players earned Academic All-District honors following their respective 2023-24 seasons.

BSU women's sophomore forward Alyssa Hill and men's junior forward John Sutherland were recognized by College Sports Communicators as two of the nation's top student-athletes for their combined court and classroom performances.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.

Hill and Sutherland are also CSC Academic All-America finalists and advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, Second- and Third-Team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on April 16, 2024.

Hill, an accounting major, achieved a 4.00 cumulative GPA in her first two years at Bemidji State. The All-NSIC Second Team selection paced the Beavers in points per game (13.2) and field goal percentage (52.9%) and averaged 4.6 rebounds per game. She ranked 33rd in Division II in shooting percentage and scored over 20 points three times this season.

Sutherland, a business major, has achieved a 3.50 cumulative GPA at Bemidji State. The Grand Rapids native led the Beavers in points per game (20.0), field goal percentage (59.1%) and assists per game (four). Appearing in 28 of the team's 29 games, Sutherland was 22nd in all of Division II with 559 points, second in field goals made (235), 29th in field goal percentage (.573) and 37th in rebounds (222). Sutherland scored 20 or more points in 15 games this season, scoring 30 or more twice.

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-America and All-Region Basketball Teams are sponsored by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA). The teams are voted on by the members of D2SIDA, NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors Association.
