Alabama high school soccer playoffs: How Gadsden area teams fared in first round

The Alabama high school soccer playoffs kicked off this week for the whole state, while Class 6A played their second round and it was pretty successful for Gadsden-area teams.

On the girls side, four of the top five teams in the last regular-season Gadsden Times top five advanced to the second round, with Westbrook Christian doing so in dominating fashion. On the boys side, the top four teams found their way to the second round, but Gadsden City fell in the 6A bracket.

Girls

Southside 2, John Carroll Catholic 1

Hannah Maddox made 14 saves for the Panthers while Makayla Walker and Maddie Sprinkle scored goals as the top-ranked Gadsden-area team advances to the second round.

Up next: Southside travels to Springville on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Guntersville 3, Russellville 1

The second-ranked team in the Gadsden area slides by in the first round.

Up next: Guntersville host East Limestone on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Jacksonville 3, Cherokee County 1

A regular-season rematch goes the way most expected. Cherokee County season ends at 4-6-2.

Up next: Jacksonville hosts Westbrook Christian on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Westbrook Christian 10, White Plains 0

After starting slow the Warriors exploded for five goals in the final minutes of the first half, including four of Anna Grace Whittemore's five goals on the day.

Up next: Westbrook travels to Jacksonville on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Westminster-Oak Mountain 3, Collinsville 0

The Panthers' season ends at 14-7-1.

Whitesburg Christian 2, Susan Moore 0

The Bulldogs' season ends at 11-10.

Boys

Fort Payne 2, Gadsden City 0

The area champs take the playoff rematch in the second round as the Titans' season ends 17-4-1.

Up next: Fort Payne hosts Randolph on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Southside 3, John Carroll Catholic 1

A day after the girls took care of business at John Carroll, the Panthers' boys team did the same Tuesday. Camren Thompson had a goal to go with two assists, while Trek Gardner and Cooper Yancey both scored. Hayes Cosby made seven saves.

Up next: Southside host Douglas on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Guntersville 1, Brewer 0

The Wildcats got the only goal early on as Elysee Laguerre found AJ Shumate in the third minute. It was Shumate's 59th goal of the season and 160th in his career. That gets him to second place for goals scored in a career.

Up next: Guntersville host Russellville on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Russellville 3, Boaz 2

The Pirates' season ends at 17-7-1.

White Plains 2, Cherokee County 0

The Warriors' season ends at 6-6-3.

Westbrook Christian 3, Jacksonville 0

JD Berndt scored two goals while Jake Edwards scored another. Eggo Alabasi had two assists as Westbrook cruised to an opening round win. The Golden Eagles' season ends at 6-6-1.

Collinsville 2, Altamont 0

A strong season for the Bulldogs ends with a sour taste in their mouth. They went 7-4 on the year.
