Alabama high school basketball: Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair enters rare club with 2,000 points

Sand Rock's Katelyn St. Clair entered a rare club earlier this season when she scored the 2,000th point of her high school basketball career, adding to a list of accomplishments that includes 2,000 kills in volleyball.

St. Clair hit the mark back on Jan. 9th in an area win over Fyffe. She got it done with 36 points, something that has become the norm for her this year. She is a three-sport star athlete for the Wildcats, earning All-area honors in volleyball and will be on the softball diamond this spring. She holds options to continue playing in college in all three sports as well.

The thing is its still not clear how rare the 2,000 points/2,000-kills club is as neither head volleyball and girls basketball coach Lisa Bates nor the Alabama High School Athletic Association was able to round out the information.

"I don't know, the state couldn't find anyone that has done both of those, in the same year. 2,000 points and 2,000 kills in volleyball, pretty special, pretty rare," Bates told the Gadsden Times after a 66-41 win over Hokes Bluff on Thursday.

St. Clair's success has come from a relentless work ethic, and help from her family to feed that commitment. Her brother Jacob, now with Arkansas State men's basketball, also passed 2,000 points in his career and the two would work out together, getting shots up in the gym. In volleyball, her cousin Rylin was the other standout and the two would spend extra hours in the gym working together.

The hard work has paid off on the court and the diamond, but it's inside Sand Rock that it paid off in a special way.

"It's an honor, when I'm walking in the hallways little kids, its special when they say that's Katelyn. It's special, it takes a lot of work and it don't come easy," St. Clair said.

After making history with the 2,000-point and 2,000-kill club, St. Clair will look to add to her legacy as a Wildcat as they try to replicate the run the volleyball team made to the state finals.
