Airport's baseball win over Huron tightens up league standings
NEW BOSTON – It wasn’t a smooth ride for Seth Jones.
The Airport senior had wiggle out of some early jams, including second and third with one out in the first, but was equal to every challenge.
New Boston Huron wound up regretting those missed opportunities later as Airport pounded out a 14-0 win.
That result leaves both teams with one loss in the Huron League baseball standings.

“We actually were lucky to get out of some early inning jams,” Airport coach Jeff Goins said. “Our bats were hot as we had 17 hits.”
Casey Monroe took the mound in the fifth inning to complete the mercy-rule win.
Jones and Colin Nowak collected three hits apiece for the 16-6 Jets.
PREP BASEBALL
Mason piles up runs
ERIE – Erie Mason banged out 11 hits and was the beneficiary of seven errors in a 16-1 rout of Toledo Emmanuel Christian in three innings Monday.
Xavier Wise and Brody Koehl both went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Wise scored three times and Koehl two. Cole Kreger and Carson Ellerbrock also recorded two hits and Anderson Moore drove in two runs.
Runyon leads SMCC
MONROE –Winning pitcher Brennon Runyon struck out seven in three innings and helped himself with two hits and two RBI to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to a 13-0 win over Jefferson Monday.
Jaden Paquette had two hits and drove in four runs for the Falcons.
Richards shows power
MONROE – Breylon Richards homered in each game, powering Monroe to a 10-4 and 9-1 sweep of Ypsilanti Lincoln Monday.
Brady Welch went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs in the first game while Bryce Lechner, Asher Simmons, Isaiah Machuca logged two hits apiece in the second.
Isaac Lentz pitched well and stole home.
Bedford bats quiet
ANN ARBOR – Jace Bloomer went 2-for-3 and scored a run, but Bedford made three errors and managed just five hits in a 9-2 loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer Monday.
The second game was suspended by darkness with the score tied 2-2 in the sixth inning. It will be completed when the Mules (10-12) host the Pioneers Wednesday.
Flat Rock falls short
RIVERVIEW – Flat Rock outhit Riverview 4-3 Monday, but fell 4-2.
Mike Giroux went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Flat Rock.
PREP SOFTBALL
Dalpiaz plates winner
CARLETON – Danielle Dalpiaz came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Airport a 4-3 win over New Boston Huron Monday.
Brenna Baker, RaeAnn Drumond and Olivia Tilley led the offense with two hits each. Baker also had two sacrifice bunts, Tilley walked twice and winning pitcher Drummond belted a home run.
Jillian Baker made some outstanding plays in the outfield to highlight an errorless night for Airport’s defense.
Big inning lifts Jefferson
NEWPORT – Jefferson scored five runs in the fifth inning to build a 6-0 lead and held on to beat St. Mary Catholic Central 6-3 Monday.
Alivia LeBrun and Lindsey Gennoe had two hits apiece and LeBrun and Brooke Payment each drove in two Jefferson runs to support the pitching of Julia Perry.
Hannah Williams went 2-for-4 for SMCC and Braelyn Runyon went 1-for-3.
Big night for Stines
MILAN – Mariah Stines tossed a one-hit shutout and led the offense with two hits and four RBI as Milan dismantled Grosse Ile 15-0 Monday.
Maddie Spencer capped the mercy-rule win with a two-run home run. She had two hits along with Georgia Linzell, Reese Knox, Virginia Heikka and Hailey Knox for the 18-2 Big Reds.
Reyes provides spark
MONROE – Eloisa Reyes went 3-for-4 with a double and scored three times as Monroe beat Ypsilanti Lincoln 8-3 Monday in the second game of a doubleheader.
Aly Lewis, Alexa Haefler, Avery Leach, and Maci Willey logged two hits each to support the pitching of Alana Aulph.
Monroe (13-11) wasted strong pitching by Avery Collett in a 2-0 loss in the first game.
Mules’ Mullins stays hot
ANN ARBOR – Nyah Mullins went 5-for-8 with two doubles and a home run to power Bedford to an 8-1, 12-2 sweep of Ann Arbor Pioneer Monday.
“Nyah Mullins has been unstoppable at the plate,” Bedford coach Marla Gooding said. “She is seeing the ball big up there and driving everything. She’s been such a spark for us at the top of the lineup.”
Aubrey Hensley added five hits, including a double and triple, and Payton Pudlowski went 4-for-8 with a home run, a triple and three RBI.
Emma Price doubled, singled and drove in three runs in the second game. Wryley Danielson and Adrianna Kester earned the pitching wins.
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
Dundee hurdlers excel
DUNDEE – Kaden Kominek and Sophia Nolff swept the hurdle races as Dundee dominated Ann Arbor Greenhills Monday with the boys rolling to a 113-24 win and the girls racking up an 85-51 win.
The Vikings spread the wealth with Jackson Martin (100, long jump) becoming the only other athlete to win two individual events.
Also taking firsts for the boys were Braiden Whitaker (200), Braxx McBee (400), Isaak Rubley (800), Ethan Eby (3,200), Ranveer Singh (shot-put), Calvin Campbell (discus), Braxton Ellison (high jump) and Dallas Bensch (pole vault).
Girls champs were Maddie Salenbien (400), Brook Hester (800), Kaylee Hovey (3,200), Audrey Przybylski (shot-put), Lauren Sheffield (discus) and Chani Vincent (pole vault).
PREP GOLF
Milan stings Huron
YPSILANTI – Max Jenness (38), Beau LeBlanc (40) and Luke Morse (43) finished 1-2-4 to carry Milan past New Boston Huron 167-175 Monday.
Jack Newman led Huron with a 42 and Ryan Biller and Avery Ealey both checked in at 43.
PREP TENNIS
Shorthanded SMCC wins
PLYMOUTH – St. Mary Catholic Central was missing a singles players and a doubles team Monday, but won every match that was played in a 6-2 win over Plymouth Christian.
Molly Blanchett, Analiese Flint and Mikayla Camilleri dropped a total of just five games in singles and Hannah Borer-Claire Leach, Gianna Benvenuto-Grace Carter and Addison Boylan-Isabelle Fitzpatrick were doubles winners.
Skyline stops Monroe
MONROE – Marisa Rostash won at No. 1 singles and Bailey Benvenuto-Allison Casey prevailed at No. 2 doubles for Monroe in a 6-2 loss to Ann Arbor Skyline Monday.
PREP SOCCER
Ida pulls away
IDA – Ida scored seven times in the second half to turn a close game into a rout and beat Dundee 8-0 Monday.
Rylee Schaffer, Reagan Horn and Rilee Weatherholt scored two goals each. Clare Allen and Jordan Ludwig each added one.
Goalkeeper Brooklyn Swanbeck posted a shutout.
“We played very well it was one of the best games we played this year,” Ida coach Tim Allen said.
Huron stays unbeaten
NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron pushed its record to 12-0-2 and Brooklyn Burke notched her 10th shutout of the season in a 5-0 blanking of Riverview Monday.
Addison Dolencic, Miley Skamiera had a pair of goals and Avery Turk, Shay Carpenter and Maggie Mentzer added one each. Ava Banko logged three assists.
PREP LACROSSE
Laboe, Flint net three
ANN ARBOR – Three goals each from Paul Laboe and Max Flint sparked St. Mary Catholic Central to a 10-6 win over Ann Arbor Greenhills Monday.
First-year senior Trent Zachel recorded his first goal and Will Craiger, Sam Frank-DeRoch and Ben Carter also scored. Jack Lisker, Ben Carter, Trey Worrell and Jackson Giarmo led the defense and Vito Galati and Bennett Schafer dominated on faceoffs.
FRESHMAN BASEBALL
Cunningham rakes
TEMPERANCE – Ethan Cunningham went 6-for-7 and drove in seven runs to lead Bedford to a 12-0, 11-6 sweep of Ann Arbor Pioneer Monday.
GOLF
Two aces at Giant Oak
TEMPERANCE – Andy Szegedi and Larry Banks both shot a hole-in-one at Giant Oak Golf Club Monday.
Andy Szegedi used a 9-iron to shoot to ace the 110-yard No. 17 hole and Banks victimized the 136-yard No. 15 hole with a 5-iron.
BASKETBALL
Jefferson hosts tourney
NEWPORT – Jefferson will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on June 8.
There will be boys and girls divisions for middle school, junior varsity and varsity teams. The deadline to pay the $100 entry fee is June 4. For more information, call 289-9001.
