Adrian man arrested in recreational vehicle thefts in southeast Michigan

ADRIAN — An Adrian man has been arrested in connection with numerous recreational vehicle thefts in Lenawee, Monroe, Jackson and Washtenaw counties.

Detectives from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with detectives from Jackson County, Michigan State Police and Washtenaw County arrested the suspect Wednesday, a news release issued by the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect, Scott Richard Swartz, 40, had his first court appearance Thursday in Lenawee County District Court when he was arraigned on a single count of larceny in a building from an incident on June 29 in Adrian, according to online court records. A probable cause conference is scheduled for Sept. 8 and a preliminary examination is set for Sept. 15. His bond was set at $25,000.

Lenawee County Prosecutor Burke Castleberry identified Swartz as the suspect.

He was identified in connection with the thefts of numerous vehicles, recreational trailers, snowmobiles, personal watercraft and other recreational items. Many of the items have been located and will be returned to their owners, the release said. However, some items had already been sold.

Swartz also faces a charge of fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police in Monroe County from an incident Sunday, according to online Monroe County District Court records. Monroe County sheriff's deputies stopped a dark gray, three-quarter-ton Dodge Ram Crew Cab pickup Sunday morning near U.S. 23 and M-50. The driver sped away, but the deputies captured video that showed the man's face. Still images from the video were released to the media by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Crime Stoppers of Lenawee County for help in identifying the driver.
