Adrian College, Siena Heights sports from Feb. 12-17

ADRIAN — The Adrian College men's and women's hockey teams hosted the first round of the NCHA tournament with both advancing by sweeps.

The women won 4-1 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday against Lawrence to advance to the semis.

Une Bjelland scored twice on Friday while Karmen Anderson and Maya Roy each netted a goal and got an assist. Tia Lascelle, Annika Hanson, Nicole Pietruchia, Sydnie Crockett and Paige Pomerleau each had an assist.

Annie Gilbert made 17 saves in the win.

Saturday Bjelland became the program's all-time leader in points as she record three assists in the win.

Roy had two goals while Hanson had one and an assist and Saige Biddle scored as well. Zoe Lohrei and Olivia Marcinkowski each had an assist.

Michaela O'Brien made 12 saves for the shutout.

The men won 10-2 on Friday and 10-1 on Saturday for their own sweep of Concordia.

Zachary Heintz had two goals and three assists Friday while Bradley Somers had two goals and two assists and Mathew Rehding and Riley Murphy each had a goal and two assists.

Casey Gerstein had a goal and an assist while Ryan Pitoscia, Ian Amsbaugh and Jaden Shields all scored as well. Julien Jacob had three assists while Ben Loreto, Jacob Suede, Connor May, Ayodele Adeniye, Alec Lovisek and Cameron Babiak all had an assist.

Dershahn Stewart made 20 saves in the win.

Saturday, Heintz added four assists and a goal while Rehding had two assists and a goal and John Kaljian and Murphy had two goals. Shields and Babiak each had a goal and an assist while Suede, May and Pitoscia all had two assists.

Lovisek and Gerstein each scored a goal while Somers, Matt Couto, Adeniye and Amsbaugh all had assists while Stewart made 14 saves and Jackson Bernard made four.

Both teams will host semifinal series next weekend.

ADRIAN

Men's Wrestling

The Bulldogs finished off a sweep of the MIAA by beating Trine on Tuesday, 33-6.

It was 6-6 after Zach Phifer (125) opened the dual with a pin before the Thunder took back-to-back decisions to tie it.

It was all Adrian from there with Mason Slocum (285) getting a pin, Blake Williams (174) winning by tech fall and Dylan Wellbaum (197) winning by major decision while Sam Ross (149) Zachary Platte (157), Trenton DiGenova (165) and Mitchell Moore (184) of Sand Creek all won by decisions.

The team competed in the Mid-States Invite at Trine on Saturday where six wrestles placed, including Mitchell going 3-2 with a pin and major decision to take third at 184.

Women's Wrestling

The Bulldogs hosted Siena Heights and Davenport in a Senior Night Scramble where they won four of seven matches.

Taylor Cutler (155) picked up a pin while Sophia Renteria (116), Angela LoRusso (123) and Isabel Worthing (155) won by tech falls.

Men's Volleyball

The Bulldogs defeated their crosstown foe, Siena Heights, on Tuesday in four sets, 26-24, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23.

Adrian (8-6) got 15 kills, 10 digs and an ace from Chase Heuer while Andrew Gawrisch had 17 assists and an ace. Sam Londers had nine blocks and eight kills.

Men's Basketball

An 11-0 run for Alma early in the second half was too big a hole for Adrian to dig out of as it fell in MIAA play Wednesday, 67-60.

Michael Rightnowar had 13 points and four assists while Josh Jordan had 11 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a steal while Braylon Dickerson had 11 points, six rebounds, a steal and a block.

Nick Seifert hit a shot with 21 seconds left to go up 66-65 and the Bulldogs held onto the lead to get the win against Kalamazoo.

Seifert finished with 25 points, five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal while Josh Rechsteiner had 11 points, three assists, three rebounds and a steal.

The Bulldogs (7-18, 5-9 MIAA) took fifth in the league to qualify for the tournament.

Women's Basketball

The Bulldogs couldn't keep up with the MIAA front runners as they trailed 36-22 at the half and lost 78-42.

Kylie Skidmore had 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Adrian capped the season with a win as it beat St. Mary's, 81-74.

The Bulldogs (9-15, 4-12 MIAA) were led by Skidmore's 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and a block. Olivia Green had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Sara Serbantez and Kali Barber each had 11 points.

Track and Field

The Bulldogs women's team took second at the Hillsdale Tune-Up while the men were third overall.

Emme Koutz won the women's 800-meter (2:15.24) while Michael Wright won the 200 (22.49).

SIENA HEIGHTS

Women's Basketball

The Saints defense held Rochester to 21 points in the first half as they led 30-21 before both offenses picked it up in the second half with SHU winning the WHAC matchup, 84-72.

Olivia DeLong had 19 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, steal and block while Jillian Gelso had 17 points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.

Kayla Hinton filled the stat sheet with 16 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and six steals while Jakarri Alven added 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two steals.

SHU held Concordia-Ann Arbor to seven points in the third to pull away for a 75-59 WHAC win.

The Saints (23-3, 18-2 WHAC) were led by Hinton with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal while E'Moni Guice-Finch had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Alven had 10 points and six rebounds.

Men's Basketball

The Saints (10-16, 7-13 WHAC) went on an 11-0 run early in the second half and held off Rochester the rest of the way for a big 72-61 WHAC win.

Five SHU players scored in double-figures with Colin Nutter leading with 20 points, 11 rebounds, a steal and an assist. Shawn Brown had 11 points, eight rebounds, a block, steal and assist while Jonas Tester had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Max Moratinos added 11 points off the bench with three rebounds and an assist while Delano Williams had 10 points and four assists.

The Saints lost Saturday at home against Concordia-Ann Arbor, 69-61.

Williams put up 20 points, six rebounds and three assists while Tester had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal and Nutter had 14 points, five rebounds, an assist and a block.

Track and Field

The Saints men's and women's teams took fifth in the WHAC indoor championships.

Matthew Gipple won the long jump (24-feet-1.5-inches) and 200 (22.06).

Women's Wrestling

The Saints visited Adrian College for the Bulldogs' Senior Night Scramble where they won three matches.

Bo Geibe (170), Mia Delgado (190) and Karlie Harlow (190) all won by pins.

Men's Volleyball

The Saints (3-5) began the week with a crosstown loss to Adrian in four sets (26-24, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23).

Marc Arsenault had 11 kills while Rasi Bailey had 10. Zak Tucker had 39 assists and two blocks while Jacob Kisner had nine digs and Jonathan Stovring had five aces.

SHU fell in four sets to No. 10 Indiana Tech on Friday, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-11.

Daniel Rua had 10 kills, three digs and a block while Tucker had 21 assists, eight digs and five kills. Kisner had 12 digs and two assists.

The Saints finished the week with a four-set loss to Lourdes, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20.

Rua had 11 kills, three digs and an assist while Stovring had 10 kills. Tucker had 40 assists, six digs, three aces and three kills while Kisner added 13 digs.
