Ada's Marr named to OCA All-State football team

Feb. 3—Fisher Marr tackled a whole lot of people from his linebacker position during a banner senior season for the Ada High football team.

He also proved to be a valuable rusher, mostly from the Wildcat formation. and Marr even threw a touchdown in his only pass attempt of the season.

Marr was rewarded for his stellar play by becoming Ada High School's latest All-State football player when the Oklahoma Coaches Association released its least of honorees last week. Marr will play for the East squad.

Ada also had a pair of OCA Class 4A East All-Stars. George Maddox was named an All-Star linebacker and Cord Coffee was named an All-Star tight end.

Ada head coach Brad O'Steen said Marr was very deserving of his All-State selection. The All-State game is set for 7 p.m. July 26, 2024, at a to-be-announced venue.

"Fisher's a kid that can play any position and will do anything that's asked of him. He's just a football player," O'Steen told The Ada News. "The way he plays, he not only deserved that honor, but he earned it. He worked his tail off and bought into the program. He had a fantastic career for us."

Marr finished with 145 total tackles in 12 games, which according to Max Preps, puts him in the Top 10 in the state in that stat category. He also had two interceptions.

On offense, Marr rushed 113 yards on 24 carries and scored five touchdowns. He also had four catches for 58 yards and a score. Oh, and his touchdown pass was a 7-yard toss to Coffee.

Maddox was also a force to be reckoned with on defense. Playing alongside Marr, the two quickly were assigned the nickname "M&M brothers." Maddox piled up 101 total tackles and had one interception.

"Having Fisher and George in the middle made things a lot easier for our defense," O'Steen said.

O'Steen raved about Maddox's leadership abilities as much as his skill set.

"He played the game with a chip on his shoulder. He was a great leader both physically and emotionally. He was a leader on and off the field. He played with the type of passion you love to see those guys," he said. "He was a fantastic force on the defensive side of the football."

Coffee was one of the team's best blockers and was also utilized as a big target for quarterback Brock Boyles. He finished the season with 11 catches for 219 yards (the third-highest total on the team) and four touchdowns. One of his TDs was a memorable 87-yard catch and run.

"He's just a great, great kid and a great role model for our young guys. He had a fantastic year on both sides of the ball, defensively and offensively," O'Steen said.

Coffee only played two years of varsity football but made the most of his playing time.

"I'm super proud of him for buying into the weight room and buying into the process. The year before he played a lot of tackle, and that really helped him be a great blocking tight end. He caught some key balls in some key situations," O'Steen said.

Coffee is also a force for the Ada High School wrestling team.

"He's one of our top wrestlers. That's unheard of being in only his second year," O'Steen explained. "He's already beat a state champion and I believe he's ranked No. 2 in his class. He did a great job for us. He's another one of those kids that bought into the process."

All three players will sign letters of intent to play college football at a signing ceremony scheduled for 12:30 p.m. next Wednesday (Feb. 7) inside the Cougar Activity Center.

Marr is signing with East Central University, Maddox has committed to Southwestern in Weatherford, and Coffee is headed to Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.

The Oklahoma Coaches Association released its rosters for its 2023 All-State football teams last week.

The All-State game is set for 7 p.m. July 26, 2024, at a to-be-announced venue. Pregame festivities begin at 6:15 p.m.

Kenneth "Tuffy" Thornton of Muskogee was selected to coach the East team with Kyle Fry of Cushing and Forrest Mazey of McAlester as assistants. Richard Norman of Dibble was chosen to coach the West team with Gary Manuel of Seiling, Adam Castro of Elgin, and Matthew Black of Millwood as assistants.
