Adam Anderson, former Georgia linebacker, indicted by grand jury on felony rape charge

Former Georgia star linebacker Adam Anderson was indicted by a grand jury in Athens on Tuesday for felony rape.

Anderson was charged in the Superior Court of Clarke County for an incident at an Athens residence on Oct. 29 involving a 21-year old female.

He has been out on bond since Nov. 17, but barred from the Athens area except for legal matters and to return for a private workout in March for NFL teams.

Anderson is scheduled to be arraigned on June 13.

Anderson’s attorney, Steve Sadow, said Anderson will plead not guilty to the rape charge.

"Adam respectfully reminds the public and his supporters that he was not permitted by law to participate in the grand jury proceeding, which is totally under the control of the prosecution," Sadow said in a statement to the Athens Banner-Herald. "This means his defense was not presented or argued to the grand jurors. Adam will plead not guilty to the charge and continue his fight in court to clear his name and reputation. Adam once again appeals to the good citizens of Athens-Clarke County to keep an open mind and not prejudge his case."

The indictment comes two days before the NFL draft. Anderson was considered a likely first-round pick before he was arrested.

The senior from Rome led Georgia with five sacks and had 32 tackles before he was suspended while police investigated him. His last game for Georgia was Oct. 30 against Florida.

The female who was a friend of Anderson’s told police that Anderson raped her after she went to a downtown Athens bar with friends until it closed at 2 a.m., according to police. They went back with some players to an apartment.

The alleged victim woke up at 5 a.m. in a bedroom at Anderson's apartment with someone penetrating her, went to a nearby bathroom and came back and Anderson was there.

Anderson is also under investigation in Oconee County in another case for an alleged sexual assault in 2020.
