Aberdeen Central's Mitchell Hofer & Watertown's Evan Meester each place second in singles

MITCHELL — Runner-up finishes by Aberdeen Central's Mitchell Hofer at No. 1 singles and Watertown's Evan Meester at No. 3 singles sparked the opening-day efforts for those two teams in the Eastern South Dakota Conference boys tennis tournament on Tuesday.

The tourney is normally a one-day event, but was moved to two days after a late start due to the weather. Singles play was completed Tuesday with doubles set to finish on Wednesday.

"It was a long day of sitting around and then trying to get ready to play," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink.

Meester fell 10-5 to Harrisburg's Maverick Ragon in the third-flight singles championship to lead Watertown. Justin Remmers finished third in the fourth flight and Mark Mahowald fourth in the second flight, Curtis Sneden won the consolation title in the first flight and Tyler Dingsor lost in the consolation championship in the fifth flight.

Hofer fell to Brandon Valley's Eli Woidyla 10-9 (3) in the first-flight singles championship to lead Aberdeen Central. Sekou Gogue was fourth in the third flight and Preston Kreber defeated Dingsor in the fifth-flight consolation championship.

Other flight singles champions included Lenny Hammargren of Harrisburg (second), Brayden Rausch of Harrisburg (fourth), Jack Pedersenof Yankton (fifth) and Zach Fuhrer of Mitchell (sixth).

Harrisburg held the opening day lead with 199 points, followed by Brandon Valley at 170, Yankton 134 and Mitchell 92.5 in the nine-team tourney. Watertown was fifth (89.5) and Aberdeen Central sixth (67), followed by Huron at 19, Pierre 3 and Brookings 0.
