Eugene-area team scores in 2024 OSAA Class 6A, 5A, 4A state basketball tournaments

Eugene-area boys and girls basketball teams have put in the work the past few months, and it has paid off in the postseason.

Here are nine local teams to watch during the 6A, 5A and 4A OSAA state basketball tournaments.

Willamette girls basketball

The fifth-seeded Wolverines (20-7) defeated No. 12 Oregon City 50-32 in the second round of the 6A girls state tournament Saturday evening.

Willamette will face No. 4 Jefferson (24-2) in the quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland.

The Wolverines defeated No. 28 Newberg 46-30 in the first round.

The junior dominated Wolverines are hoping to make a deep run in the tournament for the third straight year.

Sheldon girls basketball

The No. 23 Irish (13-12) season came to an end Wednesday night in a 56-30 loss to No. 10 Jesuit in the first round of the 6A girls state tournament.

The Crusaders are 18-6 on the season and finished third in state last year.

Springfield girls basketball

The seventh-seeded Millers (18-8) journey to defend their 5A girls state title started Saturday night when they defeated No. 10 Central 61-51 in the first round.

Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam led the Millers with 28 points. Diamond Wright had 11 points. Darissa Romero-Ah Sam and Ikunaday Filipe each scored seven points.

"I knew when I watched Central play that if they shoot well, they could give anybody problems and they shot the ball really well tonight," Springfield head coach Joe Williamson said.

Springfield will face No. 2 Crater (24-1) in the quarterfinals at 8:15 pm. on Thursday at Linfield University.

The Millers lost to the Comets twice this season but defeated them in the semifinals last year. The Comets only loss was in December to 6A Willamette.

"We hoped that we were going to play them (Crater) in the championship, but now it's our turn to get them out for the (quarterfinal) round," Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam said.

After leading the first half, the Millers trailed the Panthers 42-39 at the end of the third quarter.

Romero-Ah Sam opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Panthers responded with one of their own. Darissa Romero-Ah Sam answered with a 3-pointer, putting the Millers ahead 48-47 with 5:34 left in the game.

Kimora Wright added a pair of points, extending the Millers lead to 50-47. The Panthers missed two crucial free throws while Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam put up four straight free throws, eventually securing the Millers' victory.

North Eugene girls basketball

The No. 16 Highlanders (13-13) season came to an end Saturday night in a 58-30 loss to No. 1 Silverton in the first round of the 5A girls state tournament.

Marist girls basketball

The No. 11 Spartans (12-11) handed No. 6 La Grande a 36-30 upset victory in the first round of the 4A girls state tournament Saturday night.

Marist will face No. 3 Philomath (20-5) in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. at Forest Grove High School.

North Eugene boys basketball

The third-seeded Highlanders (22-4) defeated No. 14 Silverton 63-46 in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament Friday night.

Elias McKinnis led the Highlanders with 16 points. India Mohiuddin had 15 points. Joey Banry and Caiden Gould each scored 14 points.

The Highlanders will face No. 6 Putnam (21-4) in the quarterfinals at Linfield University at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Kingsmen have won their last eight straight games.

Thurston boys basketball

The No. 12 Colts (17-8) season came to an end Friday night in a 75-55 loss to No. 5 West Albany in the first round of the 5A boys state tournament.

Junction City boys basketball

The second-seeded Tigers (21-3) defeated host No. 15 Scappoose 60-31 in the first round of the 4A boys state tournament Friday night.

Junction City will face No. 7 Henley at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at Forest Grove High School.

The Tigers may be the hottest team entering the tournament, having won eight of their last 11 games including a 60-58 buzzer-beater win over rival Marist in January.

Marist boys basketball

The sixth-seeded Spartans (15-7) defeated No. 11 Phoenix 59-30 in the first round of the 4A boys state tournament Friday night.

Marist will face No. 14 Crook County (17-7) in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at at Forest Grove High School.
