5 takeaways from LSU’s series loss to Mississippi State

LSU has a problem.

Other than Paul Skenes, its pitching has been abysmal. The Tigers have dropped two straight SEC series. They blew a 13-4 lead to the second-worst team in the SEC last Sunday at home and are now on the verge of losing a chance to host a super regional.

Dylan Crews now looks more human as he is only hitting .200 in the last seven games. Tommy White has picked up that slack, though, as he is hitting .567 over that same span.

Skenes, on the bright side, has turned into Kurt Russell from “Tombstone” ever since he debuted the mustache. He is bringing justice in the form of fastballs.

With LSU not playing its best baseball down the home stretch, here are the takeaways from last weekend as LSU prepares for the final SEC series of the regular season.

Baton Rouge, we have a problem

Folks, we’ve got a problem, and “more cowbell” isn’t gonna solve it. Other than Skenes, this pitching staff has been abysmal lately. I’ll give a small pass to Ty Floyd because he has been serviceable at times, but the bullpen and Day 3 starters have been awful. Blowing a 13-4 lead to the second-worst team in the SEC is embarrassing. How are the Tigers going to make it to Omaha with how they are playing right now?

Dylan Crews looks human

Crews had been putting up MLB The Show-type numbers for most of the season, but in the past seven games LSU has played, Crews is hitting 5-for-25 (.200). If you exclude his 3-for-4 performance against Mississippi State on Sunday, Crews was hitting .095 in his past six games. Needless to say, he’s in a slump right now. It’s something that happens to all baseball players, but it has come at the worst point of the season for LSU.

Tommy White is picking up the slack

While Crews has been struggling, White has been raking. In the past seven games, White has hit 17-for-30 (.567) with seven doubles, two homers, and 11 RBI. He was already leading the NCAA in RBI and he has since increased that number to 84. He is doing a great job as the cleanup hitter.

Paul Skenes is who we thought he was

Ever since Skenes debuted the mustache, he has turned into Kurt Russell from “Tombstone.” “You tell em’ I’m comin'” and 100+ MPH fastballs are coming with him. In his past two starts, he has pitched 14.1 innings allowing only one run and racking up 28 strikeouts. He may wind up being the No. 1 overall pick of the draft if he continues pitching like this.

LSU is at risk of losing a top-8 seed

LSU has gone from the No. 1 team in the country to the No. 5 team in the country. If the Tigers have a bad week in the last week of the regular season, there is a chance they could fall outside the top eight in the polls. That would mean that LSU could lose its chance at hosting a super regional. Until now, it seemed as though it was a foregone conclusion that LSU would host all the way up until Omaha. Now, I’m not so sure.
