3 ECI high school soccer teams win sectional titles, advance to this week's regionals

MUNCIE, Ind. — The IHSAA soccer postseason is underway and East Central Indiana players and teams made an impression over the weekend.

Three area squads took home sectional trophies, keeping their seasons alive for this week's regional tournaments.

Yorktown girls soccer wins first sectional title in 3 years

For the first time since 2020, Yorktown girls soccer won a sectional crown.

The Tigers (12-5-1) hosted their sectional tournament and faced Hamilton Heights in the final, pulling out a 0-0 tie in regulation by winning 5-4 in the overtime penalty kick shootout.

Junior Clara MacCammon scored the deciding PK. Junior Kylar Frost and seniors Hayley Reece, Nina Fischer and Eva Ward also converted.

Yorktown will the Norwell regional and face Bellmont (16-2-2) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Muncie Burris boys soccer wins 2nd straight sectional title

After breaking a six-year drought of sectional titles in 2022, Muncie Burris boys soccer has put together an even more impressive campaign this season.

Despite graduating last fall's top player and changing their head coach, the Owls regrouped under new leader Todd McKinney to improve their record (14-3-1) and win back-to-back sectional champions for the third time in program history.

The triumph came on Saturday in a 6-0 victory over tournament host Sheridan. Freshman Beau Edmonds led the team with two goals and three assists, senior Asher Donahue notched three goals senior Theo Twitchell scored, junior Liam Hannon added two assists and senior David Chen tallied one assist.

To get to the final match, Burris topped Taylor 11-0 in Tuesday's first round and edged Tri-Central 3-2 in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Burris advanced to face Park Tudor (10-6) in its regional semifinal on Wednesday at Taylor High School, a rematch of last year's postseason matchup that the Panthers took 4-0.

Muncie Burris girls soccer never hoisted a sectional trophy before 2021.

Now, the Owls (10-3-1) are the winners of three straight after defeating 1A sectional host Triton Central 1-1 (3-2) in the sectional final on Saturday.

The match went into overtime and was decided by penalty kicks. Burris senior Sarah Edmonds scored the team's lone goal in regulation, bringing her season total to 26 in addition to her 19 assists (25th in the nation, according to MaxPreps).

In the semifinals, Burris bested Knightstown 4-0.

The Owls will face Park Tudor (12-4-1) in the regional semifinals at Knightstown on Thursday. It is a rematch of last season's postseason matchup that the Panthers won 5-0.

Other East Central Indiana soccer postseason results

Boys soccer

In the IHSAA Class 1A sectional semifinals at Knightstown, Wapahani (2-13-2) lost 7-2 to Union County.

In the first round of the 2A tournament at Mississinewa, Jay County (11-4-2) topped Yorktown (4-9-3) 5-1, New Castle (3-13-1) beat Centerville 1-0, Delta (9-7) lost 2-0 to Mississinewa and Blackford (5-11-1) fell 9-0 to Eastbrook.

The Patriots then defeated the Trojans 3-1 in the semifinals before falling to Mississinewa 2-1 in the championship.

In the 3A sectional first round at Noblesville, Muncie Central (13-4) lost to undefeated Noblesville 2-0.

Girls soccer

In the first round of the 3A Hamilton Southeastern sectional, Muncie Central (3-13) lost to Noblesville 9-0.

In the 2A Yorktown sectional, Delta (9-7-2) won its first-round match 9-0 over Centerville before losing 5-0 to Hamilton Heights in the semifinals. Jay County lost 3-0 to Hamilton Heights in the first round.

The first round of the 1A Triton Central sectional, Wapahani (9-6-1) lost 3-2 to the hosting team.

After drawing a first-round bye, Blackford (2-8-1) fell 4-0 to Manchester in the semifinals of the 1A Wabash sectional.
