Day 1 of the 2024 U.S. Open is complete.

In total, 156 golfers began the tournament Thursday, including 13 players from LIV Golf. The top 60 players from the first two days will make the cut to continue playing on Saturday and Sunday.

There are some surprises at the top, most notably, the absence of Scottie Scheffler, who came into today as the betting favorite to win his first career U.S. Open, per BetMGM. Scheffler finished the day tied for 38th place at +1 – six shots off leaders Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy (-5). Ludvig Aberg, Matthieu Pavon, and Bryson DeChambeau round out the top-5.

It was a very peculiar round at Pinehurst, which witnessed 16 players finish under par. Over the last three U.S. Open tournaments held at Pinehurst No. 2, only four players had every finished the tournament under par. 2014 champion Martin Kaymer won the tournament at 9-under par, the best score ever for a U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Just one day into the tournament though and several golfers are on track to break that record. Furthermore, the greatest single round in a U.S. Open at Pinehurst was 65 coming into today. Both Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy tied that record.

All in all, it's clear several golfers are at the very top of their game heading into the weekend. Here's everything you need to know about the 2024 U.S. Open during Round 1 of golf's third major tournament of the year.
