Wednesday's District Championships

District 8-2A: Melbourne Central Catholic 6, Holy Trinity 5 (8 innings)

MELBOURNE — Melbourne Central Catholic won the District 8-2A championship game in extra innings over Holy Trinity on a walk-off bunt by freshman catcher Dakota Cooper.

In the bottom of the eighth inning and the winning run at third base for the Hustlers, Cooper stepped up to the plate and landed a bunt that allowed the winning run to score.

"I was a little nervous, but I knew after we practiced a lot with it that I could do it and I just focused on what my coaches coached me to do," Cooper said after the game.

Holy Trinity scored four runs over the first two innings, with two of those runs coming on a home run by Cali Perrillo. Kaliannah McMillan hit a home run in the fifth inning to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

The Hustlers were behind in the game until the fifth inning, when they scored three runs to tie the score at 5-5. Emily Lowe's hit brought home the tying run for the Hustlers in the inning.

Despite trailing the Tigers early in the game, Cooper said the team made sure to keep their energy up in the dugout.

"Just cheering and making sure everyone in the dugout was standing and yelling," Cooper said. "Everybody was cheering at all times."

Both Melbourne Central Catholic and Holy Trinity have records of 11-8. The regional quarterfinals of the FHSAA state softball tournament begin May 8 for Class 2A.
