2023 News-Herald girls soccer all-stars
Nov. 20—PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jill Medvecky
Mentor, senior
Voices at pitch level don't get as encouraging or consistent as Medvecky. Very few are as impactful in plying their trade, either, as the Mentor senior goalkeeper is the 2023 News-Herald girls soccer player of the year. The Xavier recruit logged 111 saves and 12 clean sheets for the 14-6-1 Division I regional semifinalist Cardinals, conceding just 13 goals against one of Ohio's most demanding schedules. She was a second-team D-I All-Ohio and first-team all-Cleveland honoree. Her 38 career shutouts are a program record. She is Mentor's first N-H girls soccer player of the year since Alyssa Zuccaro in 2007, the first goalkeeper to capture the top N-H honor since Kirtland's Maddie Zuberer in 2015 and one of the best keepers The News-Herald coverage area has ever produced.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Ken Skilton, Mentor
Skilton does laudable work year in and year out with the Cardinals, but this was among his best work yet. Mentor had a seven-win year-over-year improvement, going from 7-8-4 last fall to 14-6-1 in 2023, with another D-I regional appearance to add to the Cardinals' extensive collection of those. Mentor never shies away from quality competition, and its ability to be so prepared and competitive vs. a daunting schedule is, in part, a testament to Skilton.
