2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 33 Javen Nicholas

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

We’re looking at a preferred walk-on receiver in Javen Nicholas, who comes from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. Despite walking on, he appeared in four games as a true freshman while earning a redshirt, and he hopes to expand his role this fall during his redshirt freshman season.

Depth Chart Overview

Nicholas attended St. Augustine High School, which has produced a number of LSU standouts in the past including Leonard Fournette and Tyrann Mathieu. Nicholas wasn’t a nationally ranked prospect, but St. Augustine is a fertile recruiting ground for the Tigers, who ultimately offered him a roster spot as a walk-on.

It’s tough for walk-ons to see the field early on, but Nicholas’ speed made the difference as he played in four games, seeing two kick returns for 36 yards. He also made his only catch of the season against Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, which went for two yards.

LSU has a deep receiver room once again, so it’s unlikely Nicholas will make a major impact there. However, given his speed, he could become a more regular returner for the team over the season and as his career progresses.
