Grand National past winners list, plus 2024 results, finishers and fallers

Horses warming up for Aintree
There are 21 races at Aintree over the course of the three-day Grand National festival - PA/Peter Byrne

The Grand National has a knack for turning up a winner with an entertaining backstory and did so again when Corach Rambler took the title in 2023. In finishing first, the 8-1 favourite turned 21-year-old Cameron Sword into the youngest winning owner in the race’s long history. Scroll down for the full results from 2023.

The year before, in 2022, Sam Waley-Cohen, an amateur jockey, announced that the Grand National would be the last race of his career – and then won it aboard 50-1 outsider Noble Yeats. In 2021, Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to ride the winner of the Grand National when she took charge of Minella Times.

The question now is who will win the 2024 edition. You can read our complete guide to this year’s race, check out the full list of runners and riders and our tips. If you’re organising wagers among friends or colleagues, use our sweepstake kit.

What is the latest news?

Arizona Cardinal strikes a blow for the outsiders

JP McManus might have won three out of the four Grade Ones on offer at Aintree on Friday but the joy of having a winner over the National fences was never better demonstrated than by the connections of Arizona Cardinal after winning the Randox Topham Chase for the small guys.

The Ciaran Gethings-ridden winner, who jumped from fence to fence, had led at the last and looked done when the Willie Mullins-trained James Du Berlais went past but Arizona Cardinal finished strongly to regain the lead and win by a length.

“I think I’ve gone beyond smiling, to be honest,” said Gethings. “I love the horse. He’s just a fantastic little horse. We’ve had our troubles with him, but Stuart [Edmunds] has trained him to the minute. I rode him at Ludlow last time when he bolted up, and I came in and said ‘that wasn’t the real horse, he didn’t feel like the same horse he did’.

“Stuart said ‘that’s fine, we’ve won a few quid so we’ll spend a few quid on him’. We got him right and usually in these races we are just filling up numbers but I really felt that we weren’t today and that we had a good chance.

“That’s a different feeling for me, coming here – I usually just come for big outsiders, but I’ve fancied him for a long time.”

Edmunds is one of the few trainers to have gone to Ireland this year and pinched a race off the Irish but this, his 30th domestic winner, capped a fine season.

“To be honest I thought we were beat, and I would have been happy with second,” said Edmunds, “but he stays, and he stays three miles. He stayed on very well and we are just over the moon.”

Peter Borg-Neal, who heads up the 16-person Oakman Syndicate, said they planned to “tear up Liverpool” on Friday night.

The race was almost totally incident free. The only one of 24 runners who finished without a jockey was last year’s winner Bill Baxter, who unseated at the Chair. Seven pulled up and of the rest about 16 were in still in serious contention going to the second last.

It was the smaller obstacles which were responsible for two horsew deaths on the Mildmay course on Friday. Giovinco fell at the last fence in the novice chase while Pikar came down at the second last hurdle in the concluding handicap hurdle. McManus, who runs five in Saturday’s National, said he had backed Limerick Lace at 25-1 but if he had to put his life on it, he would plump for I Am Maximus. The pick of his three on Friday was the victory for Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon in the My Pension Expert Melling Chase.
