2022 NFL draft: John Metchie III scouting report

An productive, big-play receiver, Alabama’s John Metchie III will bring a varied route tree and pro-ready skill set to the next level as one of the more intriguing pass-catchers in the 2022 NFL draft.

Here is everything you need to know about yet another talented Crimson Tide playmaker:

Vitals

Height: 5-11

Weight: 187

Class: Junior

Strengths

Metchie is a pro-ready slot receiver who has already built an NFL-level route tree, one he used to create impressive production for the Tide. He racked up over 1,100 yards and nabbed eight touchdowns last year, mostly out of the slot, before tearing his ACL in the SEC title game.

A clean receiver prospect, Metchie is technically sound in his route running, able to consistently beat press coverage using excellent leverage. On short routes, his timing when turning to the quarterback is fantastic, as it is on downfield shots where he tracks the football and glides into catches. His deeper routes are smooth, with fluid movement in and out of breaks. He uses a skillful set of moves to break free from any coverage down field, and working in between zones. He helped out his quarterback by working his way back on curls and comebacks, actively attacking the football.

Metchie is sound when it comes to bring in the football, with soft hands and consistent catch sustainability. He was much improved on contested catches this year, toughing out and holding on through contact.

Weaknesses

While Metchie is extremely polished, that comes with limited upside, as his physical skill set and athleticism might be maxed out. He doesn’t have the same speed or explosiveness as some of the other top receivers in this year’s deep class, and those limitations could cap his ceiling at the next level.

Metchie suffered an ACL tear in December, and it remains to be seen if he will be ready to go for training camp.

Projection

Metchie should have no problem fitting in as a reliable slot target right away, once he’s back to full strength. His polished route running and intelligent play will make coaches’ jobs easier, as he clearly understand his responsibilities on routes and in the run game. He should hear his name called somewhere on Day 2.

Projection: Day 2
