Background

The all time leader in major college football for receiving yards, Corey Davis was a player that made an impact from his first day on campus at Western Michigan. Despite not seeing his name be tossed around till the end of his senior season with the Broncos, Davis has always been a playmaker and has now found himself on the tongue of many NFL executives.

Seen as one of the top three wide receivers in this draft class, it will be interesting to see which of Davis, Mike Williams, and John Ross gets selected first in this years draft. Given the size and talent that he has on display, it would not shock me if Davis is that player. However, should he not be the first receiver taken, it is possible that the Philadelphia Eagles could select him in the middle of the first round.

Strengths

A four-year starter that has produced every season in his career. The Alpha player at Western Michigan, expect Davis to maintain this role in the NFL given his want of the football. Extremely talented when competing in the air and can take some big hits while still coming down with the football.

Has breakaway speed when he gets into the open field. Will come back to the ball at the first sign of pressure and can compete even when the defender appears to have leverage and the route cutoff. Catches the ball at the high point and will be someone that teams can throw 50-50 balls too in the redzone. Extremely physical when he has to be and can knock cover corners right out of his way.

Weakness

Is not the best seller of routes, especially vertical ones. Against quick cornerbacks, this will likely present an issue. Will drift at times on certain routes while also allowing corners to get inside of him. Will need to work on his speed in and out of his breaks if he wants to be solid on the NFL’s vast timing routes.

Will need to improve his focus levels in the NFL as he had been plagued by drops during his time at Western Michigan. Will also need to learn how to block, something he wasn’t asked to do in college. Finally, Davis will have to deal with press coverage in the NFL, something he rarely faced during his time at Western Michigan.
