Young child injured in one of two fatal shootings reported miles apart in Kansas City

A child was among those shot Monday in two separate incidents that left two people killed and two wounded in Kansas City, police said.

One killing was reported just before 1:45 p.m. in the area of East 30th Street and Montgall Avenue, said Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department. A victim suffering from gunshot wounds was found on the sidewalk. They were declared dead at the scene.

A second killing was reported in the 2500 block of Hardesty Avenue, Drake said.

There, officers found three victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds inside a home, including two adults and one child under the age of 5. One victim was declared dead at the scene once EMS arrived. A second adult was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The child was also transported to the hospital, and is in critical condition. A second child inside the home was not hurt.

Gathered on the block late Monday afternoon were several family members of the homicide victim who were awaiting information from authorities. They said the homicide victim was a father of six, and the injured child was a 2-month-old baby girl.

The scenes are about two miles apart, on Kansas City’s East Side. However, police said they do not believe the shootings are connected.

The killings marks the 120th and 121st killings in Kansas City this year, according to homicide data tracked by The Star.

Anyone with information on either killing is asked to call the police department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
