A 10-game win streak and more: Cape Cod high school baseball rankings

Its time to dust off the bases, chalk the lines, and mow the grass because the Cape Cod high school baseball is back.

Last season, eight teams made the postseason, which included the first championship in school history for the Bourne Canalmen. With just under a month into this season, Cape Cod is already showcasing its roster of talent.

In the first MIAA Power Rankings of the season released on Friday, there are 11 teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today.

This rankings list includes an unbeaten team, one team with one loss, and multiple teams above .500.

Presenting the first Cape Cod high school baseball rankings:

1. Upper Cape (10-0)

This was not a hard decision as the Rams are the lone unbeaten team on the Cape with 10 straight wins. The pitching has been the story for the Rams all season. Tyler Kutil, Jared Coates, Nolan Roche, Tyler Weston, Jacob Clements, and Devyn Schultz are some of the pitchers that have led the way for the Rams. The defense has also been solid. They had a three-game stretch where they outscored their opponents 41-0, and no team has scored more than three runs against them all season. With pitching and defense at the core of their success, the Rams will be a tough opponent for anyone they face this season.

2. Nauset (9-1)

The Warriors started the season 1-1 and then rattled off eight straight wins. The Warriors know how to score as they have scored at least four times in every single win this season. The defense has caught on too as they have shut out three of their last four opponents. Chase Beach has been the team's early MVP so far this season. In the team's most recent 8-0 win over Falmouth, Beach pitched five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, and went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs, and scored four times. Jake Doherty has also been a force on the mound, while Ryan O’Keefe, Paul Alves, and Kieran Handville have been some of the good hitters for the Warriors.

3. Sandwich (5-2)

The Blue Knights have wins over two top 10 teams in Hanover (#5 in Div. 3) and Carver (#9 in Div. 5). The only two losses of the season have came at the hands of the top seed in Div. 4 in East Bridgewater and Middleborough (#12 in Div. 2). They have scored at least five runs in all their wins, which included 13 runs in their last win over Mashpee (#14 in Div. 4). Matthew Taylor and Connor Finn have been good on the mound and at the plate, while Matt Sullivan and Ty Creighton have also been good at-bat for Sandwich.

Anthony DiGiacomo celebrates with Barnstable teammates after scoring the first run in a 7-1 win over Bridgewater-Raynham.

4. Barnstable (7-2)

The Red Hawks look like a different team from a season ago when they finished 14-8. They only have two losses this season. They lost by one run to Boston College High, who just happens to be the number one team in the Division 1 MIAA Power Rankings. The other was to St. John Paul II (#8 in Div. 4), who they beat earlier in the season. Sladen Johnson, Jack Tarbox and Eric Stanley have led the way on the mound. They have depth when it comes to hitting with players like Anthony DiGiacomo, Johnson, and Owen Jones. The defense has been a key factor as they have only allowed more than two runs, which was in the loss to JPII.

5. St. John Paul II (6-3)

The Lions biggest win of the season came when they beat Abington (#5 in Div. 4) 3-0 on the road. Hunter Alten and Tyler Ross are two of the pitchers that can give teams problems. The Lions have depth at-bat as they have scored 11 runs in three games. Brady Meyer, Colin Buckley, Max Ingraham, Logan Our and Henry Roy are just some of the players who are most consistent. All three losses for the Lions have been by one run, which shows how competitive they are. If they can keep up this style of play, they will be tough to beat.

Honorable Mentions

Mashpee (3-4)

The Falcons have a win over Carver (#9 in Div. 5), and their losses have been to Abington (#5 in Div. 4), Sandwich, Cohasset (#19 in Div.4) and Norwell (#14 in Div. 3). They have a tough schedule, but this will make them a stronger team in the end. Michael McGrail, Brody James, and Jason Merkman have been some of the contributors for the Falcons at the plate.

Monomoy (5-4)

Like Mashpee, the Sharks have had a tough schedule so far, but still sit above .500 after nine games. Their losses came at the hands of Abington, St. John Paul II, Mashpee, and a one run loss to Dennis-Yarmouth. Finn Hyora, Chace Robbins, Chase Yarletts, Gareth Voss, and Reign Stephens have all some of the key hitters for the Sharks. The Sharks have put up double digits runs in four of their five wins.
