QB Dan Villari is latest Michigan football player to enter NCAA transfer portal

Another name may soon be deleted from the Michigan football roster.

Reserve quarterback Dan Villari entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday, becoming the fifth member of the team to do so since Monday.

Three defensive backs — Darion Green-Warren, Andre Seldon and George Johnson — preceded him. So too did linebacker Anthony Solomon.

Villari will seek an opportunity to finish his college career elsewhere after playing 26 snaps and completing 1 of 3 pass attempts for 26 yards during his stint in Ann Arbor. With starter Cade McNamara commanding the offense and freshman J.J. McCarthy emerging as his wing man, Villari and fellow reserve Alan Bowman were the odd men out in the quarterback room.

Villari, a former three-star recruit from Massapequa, New York, was a late addition in Michigan's 2020 class, as the coaching staff scrambled to find a quarterback to replace JD Johnson after the Arizona-based prospect was forced to medically retire because of a heart condition.

Johnson still joined the program, was awarded a scholarship and served as a student assistant the past two seasons. But he too entered the portal earlier this month in an attempt to resume his playing career after he was cleared by doctors.

The departure of Villari will be offset by the impending arrival of signee Jayden Denegal, a three-star prospect from Apple Valley, California.
