The Cavaliers should be fine at point guard in games that matter. Kyrie Irving is an excellent starter. When Irving rests, LeBron James – in addition to his minutes at forward – can serve as primary ball-handler with an extra wing on the floor. But Cleveland wants to limit LeBron’s and Irving’s playing time to preserve them for another long playoff run, which means finding a more traditional backup point guard for the regular season. The Cavs have Kay Felder, but the transition from the Horizon League to the NBA is a difficult one for anyone, let alone a 5-foot-9 rookie who was drafted No. 54 overall. Mo Williams is somewhere between injured and retired. They might like to add Mario Chalmers,
The Rangers defeated the Islanders 5-3. It was hard not to notice Henrik Lundqvist having another rough outing on Wednesday night. Certainly, expecting Lundqvist to stay below .900 on his save percentage is a fool’s errand, but on some level, you don’t like to see a team expected to have a decent amount of problems squandering what has been a solid start to the season, possession-wise.
Will we see fewer Cup driver appearances in the Xfinity Series in 2017? As always, you can tweet or email us your NASCAR thoughts 24/7 at the links below. Y’all were moved by NASCAR saying earlier this week there was a possibility of a limitation on Sprint Cup Series drivers in the Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series.

In a post brainstorming trade ideas for this winter, Tigers fan and FanSided contributor Ben Rosener suggests Detroit send OF Cameron Maybin and utility-man Andrew Romine to the Mets for Juan Lagares and two prospects. Maybin, 29, hit .315 with a .383 OBP, four home runs, 14 doubles, 43 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 94 games for the Tigers in 2016. He is a career .259 hitter during roughly 3,000 plate appearances. Maybin will earn $9 million in 2017, after which he is eligible to be a free agent. Romine, 30, hit .236 with just two HR, eight stolen bases and 16 RBI, while playing every position in 2016, including pitching one inning in relief. Tigers GM Al Avila recently told local reporters that
David Ortiz had a whale of a final season with the Red Sox. It was so good that he was asked, many, many times, if he was thinking of reversing his retirement decision and coming back for 2017. Ortiz always said no, he was still retiring, occasionally making mention of his aching feet and the physical grind his 40-year-old body was undergoing. We now know just how much of a grind it was. Indeed, it was extreme. We know this because Dan Dyrek, the Red Sox’ coordinator of sports medicine services, tells it to Rob Bradford of WEEI. Dyrek says that the injuries to Ortiz’s feet, which were often referred to as achilles tendon problems, were way, way more complicated than that, affecting every muscle,
PITTSBURGH (AP) The stakes are nowhere near the same: hockey immortality versus two points in the standings in the second week of a long season. Still, the San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins expect the atmosphere to be a little more heated than the usual NHL October product when they meet Thursday night barely four months removed from Pittsburgh’s six-game victory in the Stanley Cup Final. “It was obviously tough to go on that long a journey and lose the way we did,” San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said. “I don’t think there was any doubt at the end of the day they deserved to win, but at the same time I think for us it’s a chance to go in, and we’re a different team this year, and make a statement
World Cup champion Lauren Holiday has had a brain tumor removed, one month after giving birth. Holiday’s husband, Jrue Holiday of the New Orleans Pelicans, announced that his pregnant wife was diagnosed with an operable tumor in September, and Lauren Holiday has publicly thanked fans for support while requesting prayers. The Holidays welcomed their first child earlier this month, and Jrue left the Pelicans preseason to help his wife. The BBC added this tidbit: Unbelievably as a three-year-old, she had open-heart surgery to repair a defect and went on to become one of the world’s most respected football players. Get well soon, Lauren.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino could face a suspension. The most noteworthy aspect of the Notice of Allegations released Thursday by Louisville is what it doesn’t contain. There was not one word from the man who could have done the most damage to Rick Pitino and the Cardinals basketball program.
The Spurs reportedly could trade LaMarcus Aldridge amidst his unhappiness with taking a backseat to Kawhi Leonard. They deny holding trade talks about Aldridge, but even if they haven’t, that means little. If the bigger concerns about Aldridge’s fit and happiness in San Antonio are rooted in reality, a deal could come together in due time. I doubt the Spurs are rushing to trade him at the first sign of trouble. For his part, Aldridge denies trouble, initial or otherwise. Aldridge on The Jim Rome Show, as transcribed by Jeff Garcia of News 4 San Antonio: “I didn’t buy into it. I haven’t heard anything about it. I talked to Pop (head coach Gregg Popovich) daily and he’s always telling me that I’m
Formula 1 rolls into Austin, Texas this weekend for the United States Grand Prix as the fight for the drivers’ championship begins to near its endgame. Nico Rosberg’s ninth victory of the season last time out in Japan saw him move into a 33-point lead at the top of the standings, leaving Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton with a mountain to climb in the closing four races of 2016. Hamilton will be looking to breathe fresh life into his bid for a fourth world title this weekend at the Circuit of The Americas, a track he has won at three times before. Can he impress in front of a packed crowd? Here are our picks for the United States Grand Prix.
Two-time world champion Miesha Tate is one of the UFC’s most popular fighters. The final question was meant as a joke, though given Miesha Tate’s history, it did have some relevance. Have you, the former UFC and Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion was asked, saved anyone recently?
Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh won’t get the benefit of the doubt from many people when it comes to a dirty play. The Pittsburgh Steelers were not happy over a play last week in which Suh appeared to kick their quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. The play happened in the fourth quarter, long after Roethlisberger tore the meniscus in his left knee (that injury will keep him out an estimated four-to-six weeks).
After seeing Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix weekend become something of a washout as torrential rain struck the city of Austin, Texas, Circuit of The Americas chairman Bobby Epstein did not mince his words about the future of the race. Despite seeing Lewis Hamilton clinch his third world title after winning the race of the season at COTA just days earlier, Epstein knew that the storm damage was more than just a little mud and some flooding. When Texas governor Greg Abbott’s office indicated it would be cutting the amount of state funding offered for the race as a result of a drop in attendance and, more crucially, general spending by fans at the track on concessions and apparel, the future for the USGP at COTA looked bleak. Now, the USGP is back at COTA and bigger than ever as it prepares for its fifth running in Austin.
Assuming the weather holds and any unexpected apocalypses are dodged, the Chicago Cubs will play Saturday night at Wrigley Field for a place in the World Series. In case you’re not up on your Cubs lore, the year you’re reaching for is 1945, that being the last time the Cubs inched this close to the World Series and then did not have something terrible happen to them or do something terrible to themselves. To risk the obvious, there will be lifelong Cubs fans of a reasonable age in the ballpark Saturday night expecting to witness a party their parents never saw, that their grandparents might have a vague recollection of, that anyone who was there might impolitely point out: the heartbreak merely waited another 10 days.
Douglas Murray, defenseman for three NHL teams over 518 games, has retired. Two months after injury ended his time in Germany, he joined the Calgary Flames on a tryout for the final month of the season but never played a game. Drafted in the eighth round of the 1999 NHL Draft out of Cornell University, Murray, sometimes known by his nickname of Crankshaft, spent the first eight seasons of his career with the San Jose Sharks.
The managers are meeting the media ahead of this week’s Premier League matches, and many eyes are trained on one specific match-up. Chelsea and Manchester United meet on Sunday, the first time Jose Mourinho will manage against his old side since his unceremonious exit last winger. Mourinho, of course, led Chelsea to the 2014-15 title only to see a miserable start to the following campaign. He was hired at Manchester United this summer, but Conte thinks Mourinho’s Chelsea laurels have earned him some love from Stamford Bridge. “I have great respect for Mourinho. He deserves a good reception. He was an important man for Chelsea and wrote part of the club’s story.” Conte also touched on Paul Pogba‘s
Could Anthony Mantha soon be coming to an NHL arena near you? Mantha, Detroit’s first round pick (20th overall) at the 2013 draft, narrowly missed making the team after an impressive training camp, and has carried that form over to AHL Grand Rapids, where he’s scored five times in his first three games. The Red Wings are well aware of his exploits. “When I see five goals in three games, when I hear he’s playing the right way, hear he’s doing the right things now and he’s starting to get dominant — you want to see them dominate the level below to make sure he’s ready to do the same thing at the level above,” head coach Jeff Blashill said, per the Detroit News. “It’s impossible to expect a player
Derrick Rose said he wants to move on after being found not liable in his civil rape case. But he didn’t do himself any favors by posing for pictures with jurors, raising questions about the integrity of the trial. And Knicks teammate and former Bulls teammate Joakim Noah isn’t helping Rose either by dragging the plaintiff though the mud. Noah, via Marc Berman of the New York Post: “It’s a blessing to have him come back — it’s great the truth came out,’’ Noah said after the Knicks’ 121-96 preseason victory over the Celtics. “We didn’t have a point guard for all of preseason. All because of a girl who was trying to make money off my friends. … [It] is just whack.” Noah said Rose is “a tough kid
BYU tried to run a fake punt from its own end zone. BYU tried what could easily be called the worst fake punt of the 2016 season on Thursday when it tried to fool the Boise State defense from inside their own end zone. This is the worst fake punt of all time.
GEICO is expanding its NASCAR involvement, the company announced Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. First, GEICO will sponsor the on-track restart zone at Talladega this entire weekend. While recognizing this isn’t the best way to judge public perception, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan’s average fantasy football draft position before this season is telling. Ryan was coming off a mediocre season. Ryan was being drafted in Yahoo fantasy leagues, on average, 28th among NFL quarterbacks.
The Mets have decided to bring back Jose Reyes by picking up his 2017 option, which will pay him the Major League minimum, according to FanRag's MLB reporter Jon Heyman. Heyman also reports that the team will reject Jon Niese's $10-million option, instead paying him a $500,000 buyout, sources said. Matthew Cerrone | Snapchat | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | About Me These two moves should not come as a surprise. In fact, three weeks ago I said, "The Mets can't wait to decline Niese's $10 million team option," and I'm sure nothing has changed. In regards to Reyes, the coaches and players all like him, Alderson likes him, the owners like him, he did well, plays three infield positions, can hit
The past several months for WWE Superstar Paige have been nothing less than a roller coaster. While being off television due to an injury, she was suspended by WWE twice for back-to-back Wellness Policy violations. In between her suspensions, her significant other, Alberto Del Rio, parted ways with WWE.
After two periods on Thursday night it looked as if the San Jose Sharks were going to cruise to a win against a banged up Pittsburgh Penguins team in a rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup final. At that point the Penguins were down on the scoreboard, their defensemen were dropping like drummers from Spinal Tap, and the Sharks were in complete control of the game by pretty much every objective measure. In the end, “unexpected” would probably be a good way to describe the Penguins’ come-from-behind 3-2 win given the circumstances. It was made possible thanks to a massive third period rally that saw them score three goals in seven minutes while playing nearly half of the game with only four defensemen against one of the best teams in the league.
