Young Yankees Fan Struck by Shattered Bat: 'You Never Want Something Like That Happen to a Kid,' Says Batter
A young boy attending Wednesday night’s Yankees game was struck on the head by a broken bat that flew into stands.
First baseman and designated hitter Chris Carter’s bat shattered on a fastball from Kansas City Royals pitcher Matt Strahm in the seventh inning. Most of the wood hit the boy, who has not been identified. He was sitting about seven rows back on the third-base side behind the Royals dugout, reports ESPN.
Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said the fan was given first aid at the ballpark and received medical attention elsewhere after the game, according to the publication.
The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA, reportedly prevented the team from giving more information.
Carter apparently didn’t see the incident.
“You never want to have something like that happen to a kid or anyone in general,” he said, according to ESPN. “I guess the good side of it is the square part of the bat didn’t pierce him or anything like that.
“So I hope he’s OK.”

The Yankees star hopes to find the injured boy.
“Once I figure out what happened to the kid, where they’re at, hopefully I can get a hold of him,” he said. “Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
