Peyton Manning is wasting no time getting in synch with his newest weapon.

The Denver quarterback threw passes Wednesday to new Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker during a workout at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Denver receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas also participated in the session presided over by Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe, the offensive coordinator at Tennessee during Manning's time with the Volunteers.

"There's certain guys you just feel like you have timing with right away," Manning told ESPN. "(Welker's) a guy that has a great feel for how to get open, and understands route concepts and, of course, he played in such a sophisticated offense there in New England, so he's a smart player. You can see why he's been such a productive player. He's intense. He loves to work."

Manning, 37, said he enjoyed working out with Welker, 31; Decker, 26; and Thomas, 25.

"It's kind of inspiring for an old player like me to be around guys that love to work. It makes me proud to play quarterback," he told ESPN.

Welker signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Broncos last month, leaving the Patriots after six seasons in New England. He has five 100-reception seasons, an NFL record, and all came during his time with the Patriots. He began his career with one game for the San Diego Chargers before playing three seasons with the Miami Dolphins.
