Head coach Gary Kubiak officially announced his retirement this season. With the team now needing a new head coach, it appears as though they may want to find a replacement for legendary defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips.

The mastermind behind the Broncos 2015 Super Bowl championship tweeted this:

This comes shortly after John Elway told the media that the new head coach will have the decision on whether or not he wants Phillips to remain on the staff, as his contract expires this offseason.

There’s no sugercoating how badly the Broncos need to make sure Phillips remains in the Mile High City. He orchestrated arguably the greatest defence ever in 2015, leading them to a Super Bowl title. Denver’s D ranked fifth in 2016 despite many injuries to key starters, namely DeMarcus Ware, Derek Wolfe and Brandon Marshall.

If Phillips leaves the Broncos, it’s going to be nearly impossible to find a suitable replacement. It’s a surprise that the team hasn’t already extended him to an extension.

Though we still have to wait and see what happens, it’s hard to ignore Phillips’ tweet. There’s a good chance the Broncos have seen the end of an incredible two-year run from legendary coach.
