VIDEO: Oliver Perez records first 4 K inning in D-Backs history

Both the Diamondbacks and Rockies have already been eliminated from postseason contention, so Saturday afternoon's game (COL 5, ARI 1) didn't have a whole lot of meaning. That doesn't mean nothing cool happened.

In the seventh inning, D-Backs left-hander Oliver Perez recorded the first four-strikeout inning in franchise history. The requisite wild pitch came on the very first strikeout. Here's the video:

There are a handful of four-strikeout innings every season -- Zack Greinke and Justin Grimm have both done it this year -- so it's somewhat surprising no D-Back has ever done it before. They've been around since 1998 and have had some stellar pitchers over the years, including Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling and Brandon Webb.

Perez, by the way, is the 69th different pitcher to strike out four batters in one inning. No big leaguer has ever struck out five batters in one inning, though it has happened in the minors.

The 33-year-old Perez went into Saturday's game with 70 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings this year (11.1 K/9).
