Top Storylines Heading into the Cowboys Game
1. Will we see the Kessler/Hogan duo Jackson debuted in the Bengals game?
Hue Jackson named Cody Kessler the starting quarterback this week, which is the right move for a young Browns team that needs to see what it has in its young players. Kessler has been impressive in his debut stretch of games, playing well and showing himself to be one of the more accurate passers the Browns have had at quarterback in a while. With Kessler in the game, you lose the special chemistry that McCown and Barnidge share, but now Hue Jackson has the option of going back to the Kessler/Hogan game plan we saw a sneak peak of before Kessler was injured in the Cincinnati game.
Putting Hogan in was a surprise move for the Browns and one that confused the Bengals defense. With Pryor’s hamstring banged up, everyone just assumed the Browns would stick with a conventional one-quarterback system. Kevin Hogan’s presence changed all that, and he proved to be a sensational wildcat quarterback Later in the game, he proved he could even make some plays through the air. With the injuries to Kessler starting to pile up, don’t be surprised to see a healthy mix of Hogan in for the Browns at quarterback.
2. The return of Corey Coleman
The presence of Corey Coleman opens up this Browns offense once again to the deep attack.
Without Coleman, Pryor was the go to receiver for big plays and the deep ball, but Corey Coleman brings back an element of speed to the other side of the Browns offense that was sorely lacking. For fantasy owners, the return of Coleman can seriously hurt the targets that Pryor is getting game to game, but overall Corey Coleman should be a midseason spark for this offense.
3. Jamie Collins, noted improviser
Jamie Collins came over from the Patriots this week and was immediately the most talented player on this Browns defense. Collins was a standout defensive star in New England and was known for his improvising. He’s already talked about how the Browns have a more familial culture than New England and seems happy to spending the second half of his season playing for the worst team in football.
Is he still going to be the same player he was in New England? Fans will have to give him an adjustment period and then wait and see. Belichick has a habit of releasing players right as they’re starting to trend downwards, but even a Collins on a downward trend can still vastly improve this Browns defense. Besides, it’d be hard for even Cleveland to ruin talent as good as Collins. It wouldn’t be the first time something good has been ruined by a change, as evidenced by the acoustic version of the Maroon 5 hit “She Will Be Loved”. Do not listen to it. Here’s the link.
