Tigers designate Valverde for assignment

The Detroit Tigers designated reliever Jose Valverde for assignment Friday, according to CBS Sports.

The move comes a day after Valverde lost his job as closer. He is 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA and nine saves.

Detroit has 10 days to trade or release Valverde or place Valverde on waivers within seven days. He is also off the team's 40-man roster.

Valverde had 35 saves last year as the Tigers won the American League pennant. He went unsigned until the Tigers brought him back in late April.

While Tigers manager Jim Leyland would not commit to a closer, Joaquin Benoit will get the first chance at save opportunities.
