State attorney's decision on Winston delayed
Florida State's regular season and conference-championship game likely will be over before star quarterback Jameis Winston learns whether he will be charged with sexual assault.
William Meggs, the state attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit in Tallahassee, Fla., told ESPN.com on Tuesday that a decision on whether to file charges is at least two weeks away.
The Heisman Trophy front-runner is being investigated for an incident that allegedly happened in December 2012.
"Believe it or not, we have other cases we're involved with; we haven't shut down our office to focus entirely on this case," Meggs told the website.
Georgia Cappleman, chief assistant state's attorney for Leon County, told CBSSports.com on Tuesday that the office still needs additional evidence to arrive.
Winston, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, has not been arrested or charged in the case. Last week, a Florida crime lab announced that Winston's DNA was a match to the DNA found on the underwear of the woman who made the sexual-assault allegation. After that news broke, Winston's attorney said that his client engaged in consensual sex with the woman, a statement that was firmly denied by an attorney for the women's family.
Patricia Carroll, the family's attorney, said in the statement: "To be clear, the victim did not consent. This was a rape."
Winston and the second-ranked Seminoles (11-0) play at Florida (4-7) on Saturday to conclude the regular season. On Dec. 7, Florida State will play in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. Victories in both games likely would put the Seminoles in the BCS National Championship Game.
The final BCS standings will be announced Dec. 8, a day before Heisman Trophy ballots are due to be turned in.
