Seahawks release Edwards, place Carpenter on injured list

The SportsXchange

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards was released by the Seattle Seahawks, who also placed left guard James Carpenter on the reserve/non-football illness list for the remainder of the season.

Guard Rishaw Johnson was signed from the practice squad.

Edwards was signed July 31 and made the team over Terrell Owens, but totaled just eight receptions for 74 yards and one touchdowns while seeing action in 10 games.

With Golden Tate entrenched as the starter opposite Sidney Rice and Doug Baldwin healthy and producing again in the slot, Edwards' role had been minimal. Charly Martin and Jermaine Kearse, who can contribute on special teams, will be the likely candidates to be active on game days going forward as the fourth wideout.

Carpenter suffered an injury to his surgically-repaired knee at Chicago on Sunday. He will be replaced going forward by former starting right guard John Moffitt. Moffitt replaced Carpenter earlier this season when the 2011 first-round pick was sidelined by a concussion.

Carpenter finished his rookie season on injured reserve with the initial knee injury.

Johnson signed with Seattle on April 28 as an undrafted rookie free agent and was signed to its practice squad on Sept. 1.
