Seahawks Preview: 4 Questions About the Rams with Cover32 Rams Editor Steve Rivera

Looking ahead to this Thursday’s Seattle Seahawks game against the Los Angeles Rams, we asked Cover32 Rams editor, Steve Rivera, four questions about the status of the Rams.

Cover32 Seahawks: It’s tough for any rookie quarterback to do well in this league right off. How do you feel Jared Goff has done in the limited time he has played and what do the Rams need to do to help him be successful?

Steve Rivera: Jared Goff has been something of a mixed bag. But as the Rams offense has digressed, so has his play. As for where they go from here depends on offensive coordinator Rob Boras. This offense is pedestrian and also predictable. O-line issues aside, the Rams failed Goff by trying to wedge him into a style completely foreign to him. His progress was predictable based on that alone.

Cover32 Seahawks: How well has Aaron Donald played this season? And where would you rank him among the best defensive players in the league?

SR: Aaron Donald is the bonafide star on this team, not Todd Gurley and certainly not Jared Goff. His reputation is stellar, but certainly hampered by playing on a team now playing worse. He’s a bright spot, but dimmed somewhat by the Rams being a very bad team, and maybe getting worse.

Cover32 Seahawks: How well has the transition gone from St. Louis to Los Angeles as it relates to the Rams fan base? Is Los Angeles a good football city?

QB Rankings: The QB position is as strong as it’s ever been

Winners and Losers:: The playoff picture narrows

Mailbag:: Is it fair to worry about Gronk’s long-term future?

SR: The transition from St. Louis to L.A. Won’t be judged till well after the season. A reminder is that the Rams were bad in St. Louis, so it’s not like a total surprise that their issues followed them. That said, the bigger picture is what’s happening with the Inglewood stadium project. IF they can improve with Goff and the offense, the short and long term outlook will be better. The snapshot from now is that it hasn’t gone well. The Rams administration is remarkably tone deaf. That hasn’t helped this move at all.

Cover32 Seahawks: What changes do the Rams need to make to be successful in 2017 and beyond?

SR: As for what this team needs to do for 2017 involves acknowledging and dealing with a lot of layers. Dysfunction is their primary issue as it’s trickled down and materialized on the field. The problems run deep with this team from the top to the bottom. Finding the right head coach is critical. Given the investment in Goff (financial and draft picks), the new coach has to be offensive centric. As for whether Snead survives to be part of 2017 remains to be seen. All that said, this franchise is desperate for a total reset. It’s also a year overdue.
