Seahawks dominate Broncos, win Super Bowl in a rout
Defense wins championships.
Just ask the Denver Broncos.
They were manhandled in Super Bowl XLVII by the Seattle Seahawks' top-ranked defense, losing 43-8.
The Broncos' record-setting offense was no match for the Seahawks.
Peyton Manning was intercepted twice with one returned for a touchdown by Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Malcolm Smith, a linebacker from USC.
Manning passed for 55 touchdowns during the regular season, but was ineffective against a fast Seahawks defense.
The Seahawks scored 12 seconds into the game on a safety as Broncos center Manny Ramirez snapped the football over Manning's head.
Manning completed 34 of 49 passes for 280 yards with one touchdown with Smith running back one interception 69 yards for a touchdown. Then, Percy Harvin took the kickoff to open the third quarter 87 yards for a touchdown.
"I am just here to represent the defense," Smith said. "Tonight was my turn and I am here, but it was on behalf of everyone."
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson completed 18 of 25 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
"At the end of the season, you want to play your best football," Wilson said. "And that's what we did."
"They played better than we did," Manning said. "I've worked hard to get to this point, overcame a lot of obstacles to be here. But to finish this way is very disappointing. It's not an easy pill to swallow."
