Seahawks coach surprised by Clemons' absence

Seattle Seahawks starting defensive end Chris Clemons was absent from the team's mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, a development that surprised coach Pete Carroll.

Carroll was under the impression that Clemons would participate in minicamp after missing the part of the voluntary offseason workouts, but that changed recently.

"In communications with Chris, I thought he was coming, so this is kind of a late development that he's not," Carroll told the Everett (Wash.) Herald. "So I'm a little bit surprised that he's not here. We've had open communications with the agent and with Chris, and we feel like everything is on the up and up and very amicable. It continues to be one of our priorities and we'd love to get him back, but it doesn't look like he's going to show up for the rest of camp."

Clemons led the team in sacks each of the past two seasons, but he is entering the final year of a contract that will pay him $4 million. Apparently Clemons is unhappy with his current contract.
